3 car loads of early 20 something kids were out racing an the lead car [Audi TT] drifted onto the right dirt shoulder sideswiping some downed tree branches stacked on the side of the road. he over corrected left then right and lost control hitting the right hand hillside and flipping some 50 feet through the air landing on the drivers side A pillar. he left over 200 feet of skid marks on the highway. Driver and passenger were transported with head neck an back trauma to the hospital...lucky to be alive.

thats me in the door of the car getting ready to climb in and shut off the vehicle...kind of spooky knowing that I was crawling right in front of two unexploded airbags

Check out the roof crush into the drivers area, it's at the seat height in the rear an lower than the steering wheel in the front

not much gap between the roof and door

Ah damn. Local. Do you know if they made it out ok? You probably know Felton Fire's Chief Ron Rickabaugh? I grew up as his neighbor and I went to school with his daughter. My buddy Noah Blum aslo does CDF.

Not having a job that requires me to climb around the undeployed airbags of crashed vehicles I've never been made aware of how dangerous they can be.

They are that spooky? It seems like they might at worst blow and pop you in the head, but not much worse than taking a gloves on punch (which would warrant the use of care, but not be spooky in my opinion). Or are they really that gnarly?

an airbag deploys at over 120mph. it's design is to be fully inflated and catch your head at the moment of zero expansion.

so picture that you are crawling in with your head being 6"-8" away from the steering wheel when it deploys [instead of the 16" per design]and you get a 120 mph sideways kick to your head = serious injury or death
