I usually make the once a year trip from Pittsburgh to snowshoe for the NORBA but with the addition of the freeride park, and new DH trails i will making several trips this summer along with alot of buds from the pgh area. Im sure many monkeys can second this...Nothing but good for the resort and for the sport...

Yeah man, the park will be open 7 days a week all summer long with lift access. I think the only time we may have to close or partially close things is during the Norba xc race, as that course intersects with a few trails you have to take to get down to the bike park. Other than those few times, which should only be a few hours at most and we're not even sure we'll have to close it yet, the park will remain open.

Hulk, I know this is kinda off topic, but do you know what/where Snowshoe is planning to use for the NORBA Marathon course?

I haven't heard any "official" word on what the course layout is going to be for the Marathon. From what I have heard in various discussions, it will pretty much use a lot of the best stuff we have.......and it'll be brutal.

I cannot wait for snowshoe this year. I love racing there. Hopefully the new dh course will be on par with the old one (my favorite course ever when its dry) ad the mtnx course will be improved upon drastically. Those trails are looking awesome though, hopefully i can ride a few when I get there for the National.

The best explanation I can give right now is that Super D sorta calls back on the good old days of dh racing. Some places are running super d races as a two or four person format, running down a wide open (basically fire/logging roads and wide doubletrack) at the same time. In our case, I am not sure how they plan to run the Super D, but the above should give you a general idea. The course will use a lot of the access roads on the Western Territory.

Some people think it's fun to ride mtn. bikes on them. Water or no water.

Does that help you understand?

And if you actually read the thread you'd know that there is some swampy land beneath the bridges they are protecting.

Ah, guess have already answered this for me. Thanks guys!

Even in bone dry summers of the past, there are so many natural springs on the mountain that areas will remain wet and muddy all summer. With the exception of the teeter, most every other structure has been built to span over a swamp, mud bog, or super muddy creek that has made its home in the middle of the trail. If we were to let you ride through these swampy, muddy areas you'd quickly find out that they are easily hub deep in spots even though they may look like solid ground from the ferns and moss growning there. There really isn't a way to route the trail around this stuff either, as where one stops another begins...........so this gave us the opportunity to build some manmade features.

Hulk, you are being way more patient than i would with people asking about the "need" for the bridges. Incase all you skeptics havent noticed this is a FREERIDE park. Which should have manmade stunts in it because that is such a huge part of the freeride movement. Everyone stop your bitching about the whys and just go ride.

Which makes SS the only place in the eastern US open beyond weekends, eh? Fantastic.

Maybe build some gaps over the XC tracks? Or wide ladder bridges? I know y'all probably won't go for this idea, but ya gotta admit it'd be cool.

Patience is a big thing in a service based industry like skiing/biking. I don't see comments on here as personal attacks, in fact I view them as some constructive criticism and use it to help with ideas.........and besides, it's just the internet, nothing can be taken personal. I know people will always doubt what we are doing and may even say negative things, but once they have the chance to ride our stuff and see/grasp where we are going with this........well, I think they will understand and their comments will change.

The thing everyone needs to remember is that this park is a work in progress, just like Whistler or the likes were not built in one day. The entire park will be ever-evolving and new stunts/features will be popping up all the time from this point. While current features may not be as skinny or technical as some people would like, all I ask is that you sit tight and reserve judgement until see what the park evolves into........skinnies, drops, jumps, dh trails, a little bit of everything.........it just takes time and lots of hardwork to get to that level. As you can see by our new website (ride.snowshoemtn.com.....which has just been revamped btw!) the committment, dedication, and desire to be the best in the east is there. Whistler of the East is a big statement and is definitely a stretch, but we are aiming high and going for it 110%.

Stiff.....I like the idea of gaps and ladders over the xc course during Norba, it would definitely be awesome. Can't say it would ever really happen, but the thought was cool. You'll see plenty of new manmade and natural jumps in the park anyways!

Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.........makes the long weekends of building and hard labor easier to tackle. Hopefully everyone will be stoked on the park this summer, that's all I am aiming for right now!

Hulkamaniac, looks like your doing great things there too! Dont listen to the whinners, adding some stunts regardless of terrain will only be more funn, and the fact that some of the bridges are wider than others will only provide beginers the chance to ride something that doesnt scare the socks off them. Having fun will only draw vacationers to the resort and bring new poeple to the sport.

The website is looking great along with the work and the attitude you are projecting on the :monkey:

When you get around to it, how about some trail/property maps on the website :D .

Actually, funny you mention it, as we were just talking about trail maps here this morning and what format we want to put it up on the net. We have a few guys going out and GPS'ing every trail and every feature. They are mapping out exactly where everything lays so we can represent that on the new trail maps. I'm not sure how it will look when we are done, but I envision a handy little map that has tiny drawings of what features are on a given trail...........but that hasn't been decided yet. However, once we get everything mapped out via GPS, I'm sure it will be posted on the webpage as soon as possible. I'll keep everyone posted.

You "critics" are a laugh.
First - Snowshoe is a ski resort. "Gee, why ride you snowboard on a rail when there's pefectly good snow underneath". So what if the stunts are there only to add a feature (fun) to a trail? People buy a lift ticket to have fun. Stunts are fun (even if they're unnessecary). Figure it out.
Second - the building materials. Most of the ski resort stuff I've ridden is built with milled lumber. I believe this is a liability issue. What looks better (safer) to an insurence agent - a stunt built with milled lumber or a stunt built with logs and split-wood treads?
Third - the width/height of the stunts. Again, Snowshoe is a ski resort. 15 foot high skinnies are cool, but have you ever seen one at a resort? Liability.

I think the pictures are rad. Personally, I prefer to build stunts out in the middle of the wilderness using natural cedar materials exclusively. Problem is that where I live you can get a $10,000 fine and/or 3 years in prison for doing things this way. It's much less expensive and much more legal to build at a ski area like the guys at Snowshoe are doing.

For grip, the best thing is diamond lathe or 1/4" steel mesh. Roofing shingles tend to wear out quickly. BTW, very nice work - I might have to drop by seein' as Windrock is under construction.

Man that looks awesome. I have been commenting for a few years how some ski resort in the mid-east needs to get their act together and build some real, dedicated bike trails to try and get some year-around revenue, those lifts don't make any money when they are sitting still!

Just a comment, and I have to say ahead of time I know nothing since I haven't even riden anything in these pictures. Putting a little banking in the corners of those bridges can let the rider carry a bit more speed over them, especially in the wet. Although, if this is the beginner stuff then the banked curves might be bad for scaring off the novice rider...

I will DEFINITELY be up there this year, hopefully on a week day, that will rock!

here is a picture where we went a little crazy with the banked corners. :D

Again, thanks for the compliments guys! Trust me, it's much appreciated.

Ronny, that section is awesome, definitely inspiration.......don't be surprised if you see some "version" of it up here this summer. We are definitely going to be building berms, in both wood structures and out of natural materials on the ground, on and around a lot of other features. The stuff we have built that is pictured here is in a slow speed section (you come out of a steep/sharp/slow 90 degree right hander onto the 84' bridge) and we didn't see the need for any banked sections since your going so slow anyways........after walking and pre-lim rides on it seems okay for now, but we can always make adjustments and additions later on. We are open to anything and everything, so suggestions and comments are very welcomed.

Thanks for posting the pic, now just have to find the "perfect" spot to build that!
