I am interested in a Pike for my heckler but never having a high end RS and my friend having many negative things about their seals and maintenance has me questionining the new series of forks. I think the Pike looks great and from what i've noticed pros doing with them they seem to hold up. Does anyone else have any impressions about the fork and what version do you have?

Main thing i wanna know is it smart to get the Team version with the aluminum steerer and hollow crown or take the extra weight and get the race for a steel steerer. I plan to mostly just run trails on this but i am a rough/fast rider and do plan on sometimes jumping and doing drops on the heckler and riding dh trails occasionally.

I love mine so far. Every way as good as the z1 it replaced if not better. Im liking the travel adjust vs lockdown, the floodgate works well too for a stiffer feel to virtually locked out. Its only a few months old so i cant comment on the life of the fork, but i think the Sram controlled RS will be of much better quality? Maybe no... who knows.

Also, Ive seen a pike team and it had the same crown as my race, and was quite a bit over the claimed spec weight, like my race.. It was just over 5lbs uncut. Im not sure if this was just a sample that was different for some reason, but it definatly had an ALU steer, and a team sticker, but no hollow crown as i could tell... unless its really hollow inside.... I just picture a crown thats relieved from the underside like most.

Good luck.

Your face.
We got one in for testing, but due to crap weather haven't had much time on it.

I can say this though, it doesn't feel like a Psylo.

The movement through the travel is much more controlled feeling, rather then the bouncey feel from the Psylo. It feels similar to a Manitou, if had to compare. Reasonably stiff, even at full extension, and the Maxle is hands down brilliant so far.

The floodgate is quite neat, and well done.

Best thing i can say is its not like some of RS;s past products, and it feels awesome.

I have no scale, forgot to weigh the damn thing. I have the race, which i prefer. I like steel steerers, rather the alloy, if only for the warning they give if they are going to die.

I remember seeing one in Decline recently that was a flat finish with gloss decals, it looked really sweet. I thought that was it...

I really want a dual air Pike. Dual air is such a great system, hell I'm running a dual air SID on my DNA right now!
(Pretty scary, especially in the park, tWANG!)

It's not really that scary. I ran the same Judy on my Metalhead from december '97 until last Febuary. It's a sid 100, which was a totally passable ds race fork circa '99. I like it alot for jumping and racing BMX (what I do 90% of the time).

i got my Pike race yesterday. the maxle system in itself is awesome, best axel system i've ever seen. the fork feels good, im just playing with the floodgate to find out what it really does. mine is coil, and the u-turn feature is awesome. i'm goign to ride it at the skatepark this weekend i hope, and mayeb take it on a trail ride.

What the pros do and what mere mortals is a world apart. The pros do not race on stock equipment and mortals do not receive weekly rebuilds of their forks. The Rockshox available to me is from a factory in Taiwan. What the pros compete with does not mean that much to me.

On the other hand, I read of an informal poll in MBAction at Whistler. They stood at a chairlift for 20 minutes and surveyed what everyone was riding: 16 Rockshox, 17 Manitou, and 110+ Marzocchi. That says alot.

Msg Castle about the Z1 he just got one and he loves it. He thinks i'm nuts for wanting a Pike but i figured i'd be the guinea pig of us two since him and I tend to share the exact same desire from our equipment and in our tastes.

I love my Pike Air. It's held up well to muddy rides and lots of flat landings with no complaints. Easy to set up, holds pressure, stiff...no complaints. I also have a pike team coil but haven't put it on a frame yet. I know several other people who are equally pleased.

I am happy with it so far & that's just tinkering with it in my garage.

Had a Z150fr 20mm & 02 Z.1 20mm & also a Manitiou Sherman Flick 20mm ..Think the PIKE has em beat though.!
Sweet, you garage is big enough to properly test a suspension fork.
I am going to have to come over and ride in it sometime. ;)

Have one now & have not been able to ride because HARO or whoever is slow at getting my BB berings to me..1 week :mumble: --Anyways it seems like a better product than past Rock Shox forks.
I plan on using it for Sport DH racing & DUAL on my Bullet. But no Big drops..
I was trying to get first place on a 51# overweight PIG DH bike..It's just been very tiring bogging around a PIG plus being kinda unfit ?.
Heavy makes you slower, no matter how quick you really are..

Yes and no...
You also see a ton of Kona's and Norcos
If you stand in line at Northstar you will see a TON of Karpiels
If you are at Bigbear you won't see anything :(

But on the trails in SoCal you see a TON of Turners.

I've NEVER seen a Broklyn but I'm sure people in NewEngland have.

People like to get bikes from their region, and in BC the Kona's and Norco's all have MArzocchi.
I happen to love marzocchi too, but I'm not gonna hate on other forks.

On the days that I went to Northstar I usually saw lots more "mainstream" DH bikes like Iron Horses, M1s and V10s than Karpiels. There were a couple, but not many, at least compared to anything mainstream. The only time I did notice a karpiel up there was when they broke.

ok... there aren't that many, but there are at least 5 on the mountain at any time. I've never seen one in SoCal or the one time in Whistler. NorCal also has lots of Yeti's and Santacruz. SoCal has more Turners and Intense, and I've NEVER seen so many Norcos and Kona's as in Whistler.

I'm just saying that you cant tell what is good and what isn't by looking at one mountain.

You wouldn't beleive how many Balfas you can see at Mont-Sainte-Anne and Bromont either... :p

I agree that the most popular brands you see can vary a lot from one region to the other.

I got a chance to try out the Dual Air Pike 4 or 5 months ago for a while. I really liked it. Had it on an AC, for sure a ton lighter than the coil version, and smooooth. I've also had a ton of time on my Reba Dual Airs, and I'm really liking the Motion Control/FloodGate setup.
I'm really looking forward to getting a production Dual Air for my new Reign, that flat green will pretty much match the decals on the silver frame.
Anyway, hope I helped, at least a little.
Good shopping...

The pike is better than a Z150????????????????
A year ago i did a testride on a 4x track, with a z150 and it did not felt that smooth as i thought it was. To bad. And the same day i rode was someones Manitou Dorado sc , and that thing was smooth as butter. Like i was riding over some clouds. If you will compare the weights between the z150 and the pike, it still is about 700 grams lighter than z150. Less weight is more speed. I believe the z150 is 2800 grams ..that;s a lot in my book. Could not find the right weight on zocchi;s site.

i still cannot decide between Z1FR1 and Pike Race or Team.

Is the pike comparable to the new Z1 or it is on the same category as the AM series?

the pike is most certainly comparable to a z1 in terms of chassis burliness and stiffness, the am is more comparable to the reba, maybe the pike air is close to the am on paper but not really in design orientation nor intended use.
