seems a bit of a nuisance for most cases. Can see it being attractive to boutique/custom builders though.

Biggest downside is that it requires a completely straight and uninterrupted seattube. That's pretty rare on trail bikes these days.
It is the limiting factor for the available travel, so it depends on how long a straight tube there is. The post needs a certain insert depth like every other one but the remaining straight tube is used for the adjustable stroke of the post. http://www.eightpins.at/en/technology-en/ and

I told you it wouldn't be long till a new seat tube diameter came along.

"goodbye seatpost clamp"... Yeah, I'm glad they resolved that problem! That's my biggest complaint on my bikes. Not the ripped sidewalls, yearly broken chainstays (fuck you Trek!), POS chain guide that can't keep a chain on (e13), tires that don't fit on rims or the hundreds of "standards" that make it impossible to keep up with.
