After 4 months of hard work, our new house is finally in its last week of construction with move-in this coming weekend!!!

It's interior style can be best described as Martini Lounge/Coffee House - esque.

I have an ass-kickin' whole-home audio system using Sonance speakers with these lil' nifty digital key pads and now I need to figure out what plasma TV I am gonna buy. I've got a $7,000 budget for the set but I'd like not to spend all of it.

I'm leaning heavily toward a Pioneer 50" which will be wall mounted.

I see that the prices of the 42" have dropped to below $2500 on some of the best models.

Anyhow... who has a 6th or 7th generation plasma TV recomendation?

Also has anyone bought from www.dtvcity.com ???

It is stupid to spend large amounts of money on TVs. Buy a good bike and get you some subscriptions to some really right wing mags. You will be happier.

Well, I've got bikes and I can buy bikes whenever. $'s are not an issue.

Who wants to read when you can watch plasma!

So you went to all the trouble to build a new house exactly to your specifications, but you didn't make sure there was enough room for a normal TV?

You didn't think you were gonna get a pile of good advice on over priced TVs here did you??? Oh - and reading is not really over rated. It will help you recognize that you should end questions with ? rather than !. ;)

I designed the living room with a plasma in mind.

I didn't want to take up floor stace with a projection tv.

The problem with plasmas are that they will burn an image into the screen overtime so if you watch a lot of one station you will see that stations logo on the screen and it will never ever go away. I was in the same sitiution and went with the sony LCD model it only weighs 80 lbs I am told it can be mounted to the wall but I have not seen one done yet.

I have seen the Pioneer hd 50'S and they look pretty nice. Everywhere I read they always say good things about Pioneer Plasmas. I am looking at getting one in the next couple of months too.

If you have a best buy credit card they send out 10% coupons all the time. and you can get a rewards zone card then you would get about $300 in store credit to use.

Have you thought about a projector? Just another option, but I also would avoid rear projection. Anyways... for $7k, IMO, you can't get a GOOD plasma. I looked at them last spring and decided that it would cost upwards of $15k to get anything that looked good AND would last.

Let me see if I can find the model that I eventually decided on...

FWIW... I went with a projector instead. Spent roughly $4k on everything and I have a picture (roughly 150" across, not diagonal) that's far better than the 53" RP it replaced.

Dude screw wall mounting......plasmas are over priced and have a high break down factor. Get a DLP and save some bread......

Hey N8, I personally have the Panasonic 42" EDTV version. (It's the 5UY model, before they came out with the integrated turner, etc.) I took a risk and bought on-line from these guys: http://www.visualapex.com/ Great service and followed through with communication the whole way, from shipping to delivery to set up.

To my eyes, there wasn't much of a difference between the HD and ED versions. (Plus it saved me quite a few $$) If your viewing distance is around 10', look into the HD model. If it's over that, you're really not going to notice a huge difference. Stay away from Awai, Daewoo and the likes. Their black levels will be very disappointing. At the 42" size, Panasonic rules. 50" you should be looking at the Fujitsu's.

Ok, so go to this site to get all the info and answers to the questions you may have. Good luck and let us know what you come up with.

Oh yeah, the burn in scare tactics are bogus. I've had mine for almost two years now with nothing.

Edit: I just re-read some of the posts. Damn there is a lot of bad info out there. I paid $3500 for mine two years ago. The deals are there. Yyou just have to stay away from Circuit City, Good Guys, etc. And with regards to the breakdown theory, they're no more prone to issues than any other electronic device. Again, go the site I gave and spend a few days catching up to speed. Those guys are THE experts.

Yeah... DLP's are really getting good but they have problems in rooms with even moderate outside light. I was thinking initially about a ceiling mounted projector and a retractable screen (ceiling mounted too) but nixed the idea after looking as a couple of friend's projector set ups.

The DLP looked the best in a dark room with heavily drapped windows.

The plasma looks good in my living room where I have 2 banks of 7' windows.

The plasma also looks good from any viewing angle as well.

From what I gather the burn out rate of the plasma is something like 60,000 hours, which is like 6.8 years of continuous use or 13 years of 12-hr-a-day use. After which time it will be time for something new anyway!

Great link!

Looks like there are a lot of folks on there who have Panasonics (Pannies). Is that because they are typically cheaper than the Pioneers and offer nearly as good of a picture display?

From eveything I've seen the Pioneers look the best. But I have an open mind and will re-look at the Pani's again.

My viewing distace will be up to 20' away... and I want an HD instead of a ED display.

Nope - not jules from mojo either. Smoothie on mojo, but she thinks I waste enough bandwidth for the 2 of us, so she doesn't say much.

Jules on mojo is Julie from Austin. I don't think she is the same as Dorba jules. I thought dorba jules rode with the rogue posse.

N8, the Panny's have, by far, the best black reproduction. Especially in the 42" range. If you're viewing distance will be 20' or so, I would definately go with a 50" model. Again, look into the Fujitsu panels. More $$ but apparently worth it.

The Pioneers are good, but the blacks are a bit lacking when you have a fair amount of ambiant light going on.

I'm telling you, that site rocks for all things audio/visual. For me, it is the defacto source for electronics purchases.

Oh, and keep in mind, these sets are usually at stock settings when viewing them in the stores. (ie. flamethrowing brightness, over saturated color etc.)
