Playing .avi files on a DVD player

I downloaded a couple .avi videos from Google video and I'd like to burn them onto a disc to watch on my DVD player. I just tried a straight burn but my DVD player said it couldn't play the disc.

I imagine I need to convert it to another format but I've never really messed with video files. Can anyone give me instructions for doing this?

Thanks

They're probably just DivX files.

Assuming you have the DivX codec installed (if you can play the file on the computer, you've got it installed), you can download and install the Nero suite. It will convert and burn the movie to DVD format - I do it all the time.

I figured it out by using a program called DVDFlick. It's open source and took the .avi and converted to a format playable on my DVD player.
