I am a member on another forum (monsterfishkeepers) When you get a PM (at least with mozilla and windows XP) on the bottom right of your computer, you get a pop up about 3x3 inches saying you have a message, you click it and it shows you it. Their forum looks very similar to this 1, so im sure its not hard to do? They also hit you with a mid screen pop up when you go to their site (incase you missed the bottom one) I have gone a few times without noticing on here.

Its very similar to what AOL mail does for the bottom right pop up.

User CP > edit option> Messaging & Notification > [ ]Receive Email Notification of New Private Messages

check the box and apply, then you should get a notification.
