haven't completely busted any, but i have ripped my xtr into pieces twice, but managed to piece it back together with some spare parts from old derailleurs. Supprized me that the main links in the xtr did not bend, just pretty much distroyed everything else on it.
p.s. make sure your chain isn't too short before you go do big drops in your lowest gear... doh!

I can't remember. I may have broken 1 or 2 xt's early in the year.
Still on the new 07 XTR, it's hit some rocks, but working perfect.
I have yet to break a dérailleur in all my years of riding. I have now jinxed myself.
I've broken one derailer in almost 20 years of riding.
I can help you break one.
I have went through five XO short cages in the first four months and there weren't even rocks around. Northstar gobbled up one, Vermont molested another, and North Carolina finished it off. It seems the more wet the course, more damage will ensue.
I use a deore long cage. All black, works fine, cheap to replace... hasn't gotten thrashed yet...
