Poor QC of BB shell machining

has this ever happened to you? it was the first i noticed in my 13yrs of riding.

i suspect that the BB shell of my brand new Raleigh SSCXWC frame was not machined correctly. It appears that the BB shell was not completely reamed prior the threads being tapped. there's a 1 cm wide centerline (of the BB shell) strip of excess material in the BB shell. This strip of excess is about 1mm higher than the surrounding shell. you can feel a sharp edge to this "lip" with your fingers, as well as, able to see it. It runs about 2/3s of circumference of the shell. i was unable to pass my FSA (external bearing) BB thru the shell because of the excess material.

I was able to get my handheld dremel in the shell with the grinder wheel. being careful not to touch the threads and removing alittle bit of material at a time, i was able to smooth out the excess material just enough so the BB would clear and pass.

correct me if i'm wrong, but it was my understanding that it's impossible to ream a BB shell once the threads are tapped...

Did you try chasing the threads with a Park tool? I try to do that with any new "metal" frame I get, some need it more than others.

Your fix sounds like the right one.

This kind of blemish is not uncommon. You see it alot in seat tubes.

I never reamed a BB shell before, but you could run the thread chaser a long ways in.

it's usually recommended you ream the bb before building up a frame... so yes its possible? maybe im picturing your problem wrong
