Beer/wine and vicodin works quite nicely together.
That's 'cause Vicodin doesn't do anything... I have a bottle of that left over from my kidney stone from last year... the darned 600mg ibuprofen was more effective... now the oxy-codone... that took the pain away... made me completely useless and feeling like I was going to puke... but I wasn't in pain... After that episode, I decided I'd rather be in pain... never bothered to fill the script the Dr gave me for percocet...

is he in the hospital where you work ?
Yes, but in a different building. I got an appointment because I work there...the surgeons right now are booking April appointments.

Time to start the Broken Monkey Beer Club!
This week I need to bottle the barleywine and move the bourbon porter to secondary. Looks like MBC will be doing some lifting! :)

Dang that sucks. I agree, go the Ortho doc for a check up. Are you still training for your half marathon?
Yeah, that training was coming along well, too. The half marathon is May 31, and the following week I have the MS100 ride with the monkeys. :shakefist:

Hi IAB, sorry to hear about your injury.

Please insist on a follow up. There is no real way they can tell what's going on w/o having an MRI. I went through something similar ... oh, it's just a sprain. After 1 year of rehab, it turns out it was misdiagnosed... tore my ACL, and found out ONLY after it popped out again 1 year on.

I had surgery and approaching 2 years since the original injury and it's still not completely healed.

As a lawyer who used to sleep with a doctor a lot...

What worries me is the inability to hold weight on it. When I did my ACL and my LCL, I was unable to sustain any weight on it without the immobilizer. I found this out the hard way out one night dancing with my then girlfriend. Tried picking her up, and the knee just imploded on me.

Take it easy man, and if you can get into PT before/if they cut you, that'll help out a lot.

i'm not entirely certain what ligament i sprained when i "popped" my knee a few years back. Snacks was there and she heard it. i walked away, knee felt wobbily, went to E.R., told was sprained, hurt very bad next day, couldn't walk right for weeks, took a little more than a year before the knee felt completely strong with no protest for hard use.

BigT says you damaged your ACL. She said a "popping" is the ACL, and if that is the case, no century ride for you.

She also said she is too busy to respond, she is working on wedding stuff.
The pain is on the outside of the knee though. Wouldn't the ACL be on the inside? Also, I didn't hear the pop, I only felt it. Nobody on my team said they heard anything pop.

BTW, we did manage a 5-4 win.

I felt a pop when I blew my ACL. I knew I was SOL and JWF when I tried to stand up on the mountain to ride out, and my whole leg collapsed.

I really felt bad for the poor little australian girl who had to sled me out of there. 102lbs, 5'1", not big enough to do it comfortably, but damn if she didn't git-r-dun.

bummer. Did my meniscus(sp?) last spring. Limped for a week then toughed it out til after interbike. Got cut. all good now. I heard a loud pop- then me swearing. Happened about 4 times over the season before I decided I was sick of it and got fixed up. If you're lucky that's all it is and you baby it until you are ready to take some time off. If it's ACL or LCL good luck.

/didn't bother with rest of thread.

IAB-

If you're in New England, I'd highly recommend going to the Sports Medicine department at Mass General Hospital (http://www2.massgeneral.org/sports/). The orthopaedic surgeons there are the best of the best.

I tore the MCL and PCL in my left knee three years ago while skiing. I definitely felt a pop followed by an intense burning sensation and almost immediate swelling. I had my consult at MGH and am planning on getting it fixed there this year.

If I were you, I would schedule surgery ASAP once you have a clear diagnosis. This should minimize any scar tissue build-up in your knee and hasten your recovery.

Good luck!

ACL pain is hard to point to because it's "inside" your knee. LCL pain is easy to point to...

I second the advice to get surgery quickly. I waited a couple years, and it was like going through the injury all over again. Quite the PITA and lots of time off doing anything much fun.

Of course, maybe you're fine.

Shouldn't you be entertaining? Did you get me a present?

Anyone ever sprain that ligament? What did it feel like? I wouldn't think a sprain would involve a "POP" when it happened.
OUCH! Sorry to hear about your knee, IAB...

I never sprained that particular ligament, but I severly sprained my ankle playing softball 2 summers ago & it also POPPED - VERY loudly.... ugh. It makes me feel gross just thinking about that sound.

That said, please, no more Monkey injuries... first BadDNAs shoulder, now IAB... it's almost time to ride! Don't make me go all by myself! :twitch:

I hope you feel better soon!

Thanks for all the well wishes, monkeys. Here it is day two and I feel no less pain. I can't fully extend my leg, nor can I fully bend it. It's sort of stuck in a slightly bent position (that's what she said).

As someone who has tried every OTC and prescription anti-inflamitory known to man I can say that Aleve is a much better solution. A strapping young lad like IRB can take twice the recommended dose*.

popping is not a reliable symptom.

did the PA straighten your leg as best as you could and then push laterally and medially on your foot while keeping your thigh still? did you have pain on the outside of your knee when he pushed your foot medially (towards the other foot)? did the PA bend your leg and pull forwards and backwards on your shin? was there any motion to these tests ("anterior drawer" and "posterior drawer")?

not all ligamentous injuries need a MRI -- not directed to IRB but rather to the others heckling in this thread. keep that in mind next time you wonder why your insurance costs so much... the ortho who will examine you tomorrow clearly has the last say, of course.

Yeah he did all that crazy stuff to my leg. It hurts the most when the foot is pushed inwards towards my other leg. I'm not sure about your last question, but he did give me some percocet. :monkey:

You'd know since you're the doctor, but that policy put me out one whole year.

The most sickening test is where they sit on your foot grab the calf near the knee and pull away from your chest...

so it hurt on the outside when he pushed the foot inwards? that is consistent with a LCL injury. was there an endpoint, or did/does your foot just keep on swinging inwards, hinged sideways at the knee? if there was an endpoint it may not be torn completely.

the original diagnosis of an LCL sprain doesn't sound completely farfetched from the information at hand.

but the only way to really be sure is an MRI, right?

I won't feel satisfied until he has one. He's too active and we've been hearing far too many horror stories.

And we've been paying for insurance with no incidents **knock on wood** for years. On the grand scale, he paid FAR more for insurance than claims have paid out for him. It's not people like us driving up insurance.
