Hey, I have a Shimano 9 speed chain and want a way to break it down quick. I was gonna buy an SRAM chain until I saw they sold the powerlinks seperately. Can I just add one to my current chain, replacing one of the links?
I personally don't like sram chains too much, but do use their quick links. In over 5,000 miles of use with Shimano and KMC chains, I have only broken one and that was due to mis-shift. I run dura ace on one bike and a kmc x9 on the other. I liked the pc59 ok, but the DA chain shifts better. That's just my opinion though. For those that tell you it won't work, they are simply wrong. BTW, the one time I broke the link, I was riding a pc59. There are other quick links, but not all come apart without a chaintool. Good luck.
How well the SRAM chain preforms has a lot to do with what cranks you are using..
If you're on a IG system your sram gear will shift like a bag od spuds. IG has a special cutting on them that is patended by Shimano (and fearcly protected) and chains wo this will not preform well.
SRAM has had Shimano lawyers at them for this and i suspect that's why they dont shift well on IG.
On a HG system they will run equal to a shimano chain.
If you dont have a shimano crank.... THere is nothing to stop you from Sram.
Shimano casettes are now both HG and IG compatible so they dont really care what chain you are using.. WIth a few exeptions..
The chainlink are also available in a cpl of dirrerent versions.. Both for UG, HG and IG .. Get the right link and live happily ever after..
Why do you need to take off the chain for anyway? TO clean it you have a tool that is a very good investment.
