Your best hope would be to move into an inner city neighborhood and revitalize it.
Luckily, the northeast has lots of small cities with what Stosh is looking for.

We live within walking distance of our downtown (Salem MA). We can be at any restaurant in town, my wife's office, the elementary school and the commuter rail to Boston w/i 10 minutes on foot. To top it off, we're on a coastal inlet and can walk to our boat too.

Why people live in bed-room communities off an interstate exit is beyond me.

he's right. it's a real trade-off. i would love to be able to walk to stuff and not be so reliant on a car, but on the other hand i then wouldn't have an acre of land and bike trails right near my house. living in a city again (dublin) definitely had some merit, but there were things i missed too, like having a nice yard i could play in, not living on a busy street where my kids won't worry about getting plowed over, and cranking my stereo as loud as i wanted w/o offending anyone.
It's true but you can have a lot of that in semi-dense housing.

Honestly if you were to have a small plot of lan like the one in N8's pics but you were to have equal access to a larger green area that you didn't have to maintain would that be acceptable? The houses would be spaced out a bit more than N8's too though.

4" minimum... no slump test required, and we use a 3000 psi mix.

The finishers use a donkey dick on the beams and under the brick shelf. No inspectors are required on the job. I monitor the pour which reminds me... I need to call the concrete supplier and have them addd some 1% to tomorrow's mix so it will set up in the cool temps we've been having.

Ahhh ya see that type of town is what I'm looking for.
They're all across the country too. Mass transit is an important part for these type of communities to survive as well.

See the whole thing is that the automobile has allowed us to have communities like Levitown and N8 town. We underestimate what a true community is. We easily forget how important the corner store or local church/mosque is to building a community.

It's blaringly obvious how important the car is to the people who are moving in to N8 town because look at how prominent the garge is ne these style homes.
Years ago garages were detached and cars were parked in the alley.
I know it utopia but people need to be aware of how important these things are and we as Americans just aren't anymore. We want what we want when we want it and our house and over priced SUV's are no different.

Your house is the largest purchase you'll make in your life, educate yourself on what you need and what you truely want. Just because your kitchen is painted the newest ralph lauren color and you have the coolest lights from Ikea that doesn't mean your house will make you happy.

Ahhhhh....an idealist. I like that.

Here's how it happens down here. Contractor/Developer(many times one in the same)buys land, puts 4-6 differing house plans in the development, varying the roof schematic or porches slightly to tailor to the customer---some may be spec'ed, some may be "slightly customized here and there. They sell the hell out of them, finish the development and move on. Economics dictate that if you want to make $$, that's how you have to do it. The demand for housing that is affordable outweighs the need for something that is unique and has walking access to everything. In a perfect world.........

I have a couple of ikea lamps. I like them because they were $5 and they emit light. :)

We will be in the 30's tonite and when the pour happens at 8AM it will be upper 40's... but will be in the mid 70's by noon.

There is no slump test, no cylinders, no testing of the cured concrete for residential construction here. There is on commercial buildings but not homes.

My civil engineer does inspect the post tension cable installation and he witnesses the tensioning of the cables after the cure but that is it.

I live 1hr from Woodstock..... my boss is a hippy, my teachers were all hippies.

I think true intellectual hippies were basically communists with a dash of capitalism thrown in.

We don't need slump test on a home here either. Many times we ask for them to be done to cover our arse.

However the local code enforcers need to stop by at different points in the job.

I've called the inspector's office and scheduled an inspection for this afternoon. I called the plumber and got him out there to wrap the copper water lines before we pour. The electrician will rough in the some conduit to the island in the kitchen. The pumper truck has been verified and the concrete plant has me on the schedule with some 1% add to help with the set up time because it is cool here. The concrete finishers will be out dressing the beams and making sure all of the cable 'chairs' are under the floating forms in the morning.

The carpenter crew has the brick shelf and floaters in now.

We are all set to pour this baby in the morning!

And the pour:

Setting up the pumper:

It's 8:30 AM and we are waiting for concrete which should have been on site at 8:00..

Finally!!! :)

Where we are at by 11:30 AM.... first pump truck died, another had to come from across town (30 min) to pick up the load... first truck repaired and back in action. It's ALWAYS something! Pump truck costs about $1000 for 4 hrs :dead:

10 yards left to pour...

The coolest part is being able to mow & edge your yard in 20 minutes so you can go biking!

:)
Mow? You're assuming a cyclist would put plants in.

I'm forgoing the "landscaping" thing for a pump track. I don't have to buy/store a mower, don't have to install a sprinkler system, and I can "mow" it with the gleefull sound of my buzzing tires!
