For the neg spring I strip forks before I scrap them so I had a longer spring that almost fit. I got the battery drill, put some tape on either end of the air spring shaft and cut in a slightly smaller dia spring seat using a soldering iron and a cable tie around the trigger on the drill keeping a constant speed, the other end of the shaft rest in a V block.

Also re painted the lowers as they looked horrid and cut in slots to let me flick the seals out easier.

The Butcher is OK, the Purgatory is really flimsy. The casing on the Purg is different, even if both are called Grid 2Bliss 2.3.

Uzzi vpx and a 6.6. Old stuff at this point. But I've ridden a solo, current nomad (plus the other two iterations), and a current v10. I liked the way the intenses rode better than most of the SC frames (blur lt and solo excluded).

I loved the uzzi actually. It was more the geo and stiffness that I had problems with more than the suspension feel. All VPP bikes have that funky hammock curve. Some very midly and some really exaggerated (like the new nomad). I just like one end of the spectrum vs. the other. Plenty of people out there are the exact opposite. Just see all the raving about that current nomad........

Woo, you still rocking the DHR for downhill? What would you be riding if you moved on from the DHR?

I don't mind a 12.5ish BB on a 6" trail bike but throwing 26ers on a dh bike made for 650bs might be sketchy. So I'm going to basically pick a 26" frame, and buy two of them, or start buying what trek and others are selling as 'park bikes'. I probably need to get on that pretty soon.

I will NEVER own a 650b dh bike until dh tires weigh 400 grams. So....never.

I've already ridden it a ton so I know what it does. It's an insane descender. As in there's no weird part of the travel, pumping or pedaling, and no weird ramps or fall off portions. I threw 4 rubber bands into shock just to give a tad more ramp.

I've liked the linkage rate on every Norco I have ridden. A Sight with a 150mm fork may be my next trail bike.

I borrowed a Sight with a 150 Pike for the Whistler EWS and that bikes rocks. It punches well above it's weight class.

2014 riding season is almost over but I finally got this project finished.

Hand built fillet brazed steel frame built by me in my garage. Simple single pivot with 158mm of travel.

Frame weight without the shock was 7.47 lbs. Total bike built up is 31.76lbs.

The shock came off my Xprezo Super D (7.875 x2.25 2011 Fox RP23) and it's a low compression tune and medium rebound tune. I would like to see how a medium compression tune feels on it.

Yes that was a "doh" moment.

I had the front tri done with lots of work still to do on the rear. So I quickly sanded it up and hit it with some paint, then thought "hmmm cables guides. derp".

Electrical tape ftw.

I knew I was going to run them down the downtube and under the shock, but at least this way when I do put them on they'll be in the exactly correct spots.

The Heckler and the Orange Five/Alpine certainly played a part in the inspiration.

The pivot is further back and lower than those above. It's basically inline with a 32t chainring as the bike can only fit a single front ring.

Set up cost if the biggest.

This is my brazing set up.

My brazing set up is a small "aircraft torch" being run on oxy/propane. The oxy is via an oxygen concentrator, yes just like the one your grandma is hooked up to at the old folks home. I'll never run out of oxygen and the cost for a refurb concentrator is less than a bottle and regulator. In total I have about $400 (Canadian loonies) invested in my brazing rig. The tips for the torch are ones specifically designed for propane vs acetylene. Tank can now be filled anywhere and much more economically than acetylene. Your not likely to find a good used TIG machine able to deal with thin wall bike tubing for that money. Even then you'd still want a brazing rig for cable guides and bottle boss type stuff.

In terms of strength both the braze and the tig joint when done right are stronger than the tube so no worries about a weld failing before a tube buckles.

Personally I also like the look of fillet braze vs tig. You have more room for style, you can do big smooth fillets, little smooth fillets, or "bronze welded" that looks like big fat brass TIG stacks.

We'll see what happens on the next one. It will be more XC-ish angles, hopefully lighter and able to fit 2x for long stupid days in the saddle.

Have one now have been riding it a few weeks. A few fast guys around here have had saddle time and really like it! They all say its climbing is amazing and they are sponsored by large bike brands. The build KIT is pretty nice on them for the price. Our LG was 29.2LBS and is the $5200 build.
