BEACON HILL TRAILS DRAFT PLAN MADE AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC
Trail map, development plan and more

Spokane, WA – The Beacon Hill Project will release the final draft of the Beacon Hill Trails System Draft Concept Plan to the public on June 3, 2009. The public is invited to an open house hosted by the Beacon Hill Advisory Group at REI, 1125 N Monroe St, from 5 - 7 pm, where the public can review the plan, ask questions, and preview the new trail map.

The Draft Concept Plan is the culmination of three years of work by the Beacon Advisory Group (BAG), made of landowners, Parks representatives, neighbors, and trail users. The goal of the Beacon Hill Project has been to bring this trail system “above board” as a community asset — to recognize it and preserve it in order to secure its future and to complement new development in the area. The trail system on Beacon Hill is heavily used and well known; yet at the same time, it has not been formally recognized as a community recreation resource.

The Beacon Hill trail system connects to adjoining neighborhoods and links five parks. Private landowners comprise the major portion of ownerships within the system. Many have expressed their support and desire to participate in the plan process and to continue to allow public use of their lands. They have also expressed their concern to have that use more closely monitored to minimize public encroachment on those portions of their lands outside of the permitted trails.

With the support of a grant from the National Park Service and other organizations, the BAG created the Draft Concept Plan, which outlines a vision for the system and identifies potential maintenance needs and management issues, trail issues such as new trails, improvements or decommissioning and inventory, trailhead improvements, potential recreation opportunities, creation of an outdoor recreation center, and connections to the surrounding communities. In addition, the plan identifies potential partners who will collaborate on the system’s development, management, and funding.

In addition to the plan, a preview of the soon-to–be-published Beacon Hill trail map will be available to the public for viewing. This large-scale, full-color trail map is also part of the collaboration with the National Park Service.

The public is invited to come and view the plan and maps. A comment period for the general public to comment on the plan will also open at this time.

The Beacon Hill Project is a community collaboration between the National Park Service, Fat Tire Trail Riders, Spokane Parks and Recreation Dept, Spokane County Parks Recreation, and Golf, Avista, and many private landowners.
