MX gear is more for deflecting rocks kicked up by roost, not blunt trauma from a tree/rock/hiker. I'd look at real body armor like Rockgardn, 661 or Dianesse.
I already have elbow and forearm guards so i'm thinking about going with the 661 assault pressure suit. The shortsleve one. Its also cheaper and i liek that cuz i'm in college.
I'd get a pressure jacket, mine has saved my butt a few times. Also I know a guy who had a plastic roost protector and shattered it on a rock he's since switced to a pressure jacket.
Try them on and buy the one that is the most comfortable. The more comfortable it is, the more likely you are to wear it. IME, the 661 was hotter that the Dianese. Good quality for the money though.
When it comes to protective equipment, I don't even look at prices.
661 Pressure suit works great and does not cost a lot,
Also take note the Assault version is not as well padded front and rear as the Pressure suit so it's not the same jacket minus the lower arm protection.
I liked the Pressure suit a lot but did not care for the elbow pads on it so I just cut them off and now use my own Roach pads which fit me much better.
I rode with a fox roost protector and it worked as beginner DH armor but it got annoying and i just stopped wearing it. This season i mostly didn't wear armor except leg pads but picked up a dainese jacket up in whistler and rode it and it saved me a lot. I'd say a full armor jacket would be better then the MX protectors as they move around and arm pads move around where as one piece of armor it all sits in place good.
Pressure suits decent for the money. If you are forking out the cash, look at the 05 Rockgarden jacket. If I get another suit of armor it's first on my list. It has removable arm pads, which is nice, especially during the warmer months. I wish my pressure suit did, because i like my Roach pads blow the arm pads away.
I have an 04 Pressure Suit. Nice construction, good fit, cool enough. My only real gripe is that one of the arms tends to "twist" while I am riding- the pad kind of migrates around my arm a bit. Also, I think they made the plastic shoulder pads too big. I'm happy that I bought it, even if I usually don't use it.
Dude there aren't any trails gnarly enough in SLO to warrrant a pressure suit. Just put band aids on your elbows before you ride, so you'll be using Murphey's Law backwards.
I'd never look into a roost protector (because that's what they are) for DH riding. Like Zark said it's more of a thing to protect you from the rider's infront of you's roost (rocks, mud, whatever flung up by the rear wheel).
Getting a flak jacket (or pressure suit) and really any other sort of full chest/arm/back body armor that was ment for MTB (you could use it in MX too) was the best investment. Anything that's a XC'ish trail I just use knee/shin guards. If it's full DH I go the full face route, body armor, knee/shin guards. Once you fall a few times with the jacket on you get use to it and it's ok. Not like I'm going 50 mph but at the slow Santa Barbara pace if I fall I can usually get back up ok. It just takes the edge off a hit.

Second that..........a roost ir probably better than nothing....but i wouldn't buy one. Most of the stuff mentioned it good equipment. I personally have a Dainesse Next Jacket, and have used them since the original design way way back when. But it's some major $, but you get what you pay for. I heard the TLD decender i think it's called it pretty nice too.
Definitely buy something designed for bike riding...the MX stuff tends to move around and become uncomfortable....I also don't think they protect as well as the MTB designed suits out there....D
