Hi,

I have a problem with my Hayes HFX-9 8" front brake.
When I ride a normal DH run, it makes a strange black film over the rotor surface. It makes it don't brake properly. The pads slips over the rotor surface.

I started bleeding. It have the proper hard touch lever, so I can discard an hydraulic issue... and it continues sliping.
Then I change the pads (the same originals)... the same.
I tried with a rotor from a friend which brakes well... it did't work.
I've watched the pistons.... no leaks or "sweating".
I switched the caliper for the rear.... nothing.

I can't compare it with my rear brake because I have EBC's.... a very different feeling

Yesterday I've washed everything very well. If I get wet the rotor with water and then ride and brake repeatedly, the black film gives off the rotor and starts to brake well, but if you ride a longer run (normal DH) it start to accumulate the black film again and slip.

Have somebody had this problem anytime?
What do you think it could be?

I don't know as I just picked up my first pair of Hayes myself.

Maybe your pads/rotor are contaminated....people talk about it but I haven't run into that problem yet.

Can you run EBC on the front? You said it was working on the rear, correct?

Sounds like you contaminated your old pads and they built up a glaze on the rotor. The new pads should still be okay, but you need to get that glazing off the rotor... and it may have transferred a bit to the new pads too.

Clean your rotors with a scotchbrite pad, and your pads with an emery board or sandpaper. Wipe with rubbing alcohol (isopropyl) to rinse everything clean.

yeah.

You can't just change/clean ONE thing. If you have contaminated pads, then you have a contaminated rotor. If you replace your pads, you'll just re-contaminate them as soon as they touch the rotor and you're back to square one.

Take everything off. Clean the rotor with isobropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) and get new pads. Don't let anything that's new/cleaned touch anything that's old/dirty. That should help.

Well, I'll try scotchbrite on rotors, sand on pads and a lot soap and hot water on everything

I hit mine with Pledge (lemon scented) last week and they worked fine this weekend......

what contaminates them? I figured I was screwed after I misted the rotors with funiture polish....

I am big and would noticed if they didn't work

none of that is gonna work.

To get oil off the rotor, you need alcohol or paint thinner/acetone/etc or some other powerful solvent. You can use soap and water but I'm not a big fan of it. If you can run it thru a dishwasher that might help.

For the pads, nothing is going to get the oil out unless you put them in a HOT flame for 5 minutes or so. Or yuo can use a stove burner on "HI". Sandpaper does not remove oil from pads.

Your best bet is to get new pads.

I cleaned the rotor with acetone then I heated to purple with a blowtorch... then I sanded it and cleaned it again with acetone + new pads.....

It still makes the hard cristal black film. Everything is dry and no leaks.....

Vitox has watched it...... he told me that I just have to sell it

Wipe down the rotor with rubbing alcohol and clean paper towels.

For the pads, fire up the oven (or toaster oven, which I use) to about 450-500F, then bake them for 20 minutes.
