when turning the ignition of my 2001 Toyota 4Runner, it sputtered badly but then caught. it was fine pulling out in reverse but when i put it in drive something went wrong. it revved really high but inched forward and couldnt climb a small hill out of the parking lot.
does anyone know what this could be

gotta be careful trannies will suck you dry. Have you tried engaging the trannie and slowly rocking forward and backward repeatedly until your rpm comes up a bit and you release a big load of torque?

It just happened to me & luckily I was able to limp home from the back country.
