Profile Clanks - I mean cranks.....

I'm a big dummy, but I have a 7/32 SAE Allen ready to roll.....

I get all kinds of crunching and clanking as I pedal my Profile
crank setup mtb. Obviously something is loose....do I just tighten the cups and put the crank back on or is there (as I suspect) more to it?

This all started when the non-drive crank fell off (bolt had backed out and disappeared) I bought a new bolt and it was OK for a week......

Thanks,

Big dummy.

I am unfamiliar with your cranks, but will take a stab at it. Whether or not they are splined or sqaure taper cranks, pull off the crank arm that fell off and look at the crank mount area. Any signs of damage, like rounded off edges? If yes you need a new spindle. You could live with what you have but see the next question.
Look at the crank arm where it mounts to the spindle. Any damge there? If no, but there is damage to the spindle- there will be damage if you keep riding. Replace the damaged parts now.
If there is absolutely no damage- apply a very thin and light coating of grease to the spindle where it mates with the crank arm. Assemble to proper torque. Ride. No squeak? No movemnet of crank arm? Good- pull out crank bolt, adda little blue locktite and reassemble and ride happy. Still creaking? Check the other crank. Then check the bottom bracket. Good luck.

Dingus, The crunching can only be shot bearings because you over tightened em and pushed the inner race too much. Take the arms off, and spindle and see if there is any extra side to side play on the long spacer in between the bearings in the cups. If there is a little play add a extra thin washer so there's no play when you titghten the cups all down.I had to grind (make) a washer so you also maybe need new bearings. $$ If your in UsA you can order them from Quality Bike Prod thru your LBS QBP#BB8539, you may need 2 or more. When you press in new bearings only push on the outside ring so you don't wreck em, grease em to, by hammering with a block of wood.
