So this thing is supposed to bring to life a lot of older single pivot designs as modern pedalable freeride bikes. Truth?

Yes, it is true a buddy of mine only rides FS bikes but only rides simple FS bikes with as little moving parts as possible. His favorite bike of all time is his 2nd gen Foes Wesel. The thing was like a pogo stick b4 he put a 5th on there now the thing floats like a KTM enduro. It defanatly was a worthy purchase. that old bike is so much fun to ride now. I don't know much about the shock, but after riding one I was thinking of throwing one on my BB7 just to play around with, after I get a fork and some new metal pedals of course.

absolutely - i just got a new bullit with a 5th element back in late february, and the shock is AMAZING. You can tune it to exactly how you'd like it to feel, although you do need to be careful - start fooling around with the adjustments too much and then you can totally mess up the ride. My advice is to just start off with the settings that are recommended for your size/weight, then to make small adjustments from there. Also, it leaks a little air over the course of a week or two, but its nothing major, and is easily fixed. Now for the handling - the shock is nearly flawless, at least compared to the fox's. It lets the bike pedal like a hardtail, and it keeps the wheel glued to the ground when need it to be. The 5e has a very smooth feel, not so lively and bouncy like the fox. The shock will soak up a bumb, but then lay the wheel back down on the ground as if the bumb was never there - it doesnt kick the wheel up like the fox does sometimes. Also, the 5e can take drops no problem, although its long-term durability has yet to be seen. Nonetheless, i have had NO problems with my shock so far. However, should you ever buy/ride one take note of this: The 5e runs A LOT of sag - almost twice as much of the fox's. Don't worry though, the extra sag is completely normal and is actually a key part of how the bike works. Also, because of the added sag the bike may feel like its always bottoming out - its not, and so far mine has never bottomed out, even off drops. Overall, this shock is unbeatable, except perhaps an avalanche, but even an avalanche cant compete with the 5e's tunability.
