Just for future notice, if you want to look at pornography, please don't do it at the library. Quite frankly, I don't want to see dirty videos at 9:00 in the morning. I have no problem with pornography in general but I don't want to be forced to see it, nor should it be forced on me BEFORE lunchtime.

I can see the back row of our public access computers here at my library and this dude came in, sat down and went right to searching for porn. I watched him for a while and he kept turning around looking to see if I was watching. He saved some pics to a disk but when he started with the free streaming video I just had to go out and break it down for him.

What is it with these people who look at porn at a PUBLIC LIBRARY??!?!!! You *know* you're going to get caught or seen by someone so keep your little hobby at home, where it belongs. :thumb:

Maybe he was turning around looking at you and getting off and the porn just helped...

You guys need to install something like Websense then.
we don't filter - we're medical/health sciences and most filters wind up screening out potentially useful web sites. for example, if they screen using words, then any legitimate searching for breast or penis or any other acceptable term is eliminated.

as a general rule, most libraries support NOT filtering. most public libraries and most school libraries filter because they have to - we'll cut your funding unless you install filters kind of deals. kind of like RM having to monitor posts to keep the ad people happy. :)

Peeps used to do that same thing in the base library at Randolph AFB. I would bust them out loud when I caught them. It mostly pisses me off since there are little kids walking around. I may even give it up at home this makes me so mad.

Don't encourage him.

It's like feeding wild animals. Give 'em what they want once and they won't ever leave you alone.

Your library-porn friend probably just watched one too many porn movies, and thought real life was just like porn - if he broke the rules, the naughty librarian would come over and give him a spanking

What exactly is the policy? If you're a publically funded university I would think that you couldn't block it all together.

Around here looking at porn in a public library is legal, if they blocked it it would be a violation of free speech. And if the person next to you doesn't like it, the librarian can only suggest that person move.

And no, I don't have any first hand experience with this ;) my friend used to work in the public library.

It's not a violation of free speech. If it were an adults-only library, it might be, but there are kids around so of course they can say you're not allowed to look at porn.

Your friend is full of it...

Yeah I figure if someone's going to do that in public, then they deserve to get busted for everyone to hear. In my mind, he gave up his right to privacy when he sat down and started watching streaming video of anal sex right in front of my office window. Nothing like seeing that when you're trying to answer a doc's email about some new medicine...

Think again. By blocking access to pornography sites the library is basically taking away the first amendment right for the owner of that particular site. The library can't filter legal content, that's like telling all the authors of books with swear words in them that they are pulling them off the shelves because parents complained. Now, if they put filters on the kids computers then that's not a violation of free speech as the kids aren't even of age to view the material.
