I've got some truvativ cranks with the isis drive that don't use the one key release system that I was trying to pull off an old bike to put on my girlfriend's.

I got the bolt out of each side, had the drive side come off nice and easy without needing a crank puller and then ran into a brick wall on the non-drive side.

I put the crank puller in and started un-screwing it, got about 4 or 5 really tough revoultions and then pop! It spins free for a second and goes back to really tough. I get the crank puller back out to find the little tip on it has twisted itself off the tool. I tried other methods like cussing at it or beating it with a hammer, but nothing seems to get this crank arm off. Anyone have any suggestions? Am I just not using the crank puller correctly or is there anything I missed?

There are a couple types of crank pullers -- one for suare taper and one for ISIS. The ISIS puller has a larger head on it. I use a square taper to pull ISIS arms by sliding a bolt into the hollow of the ISIS axle, allowing the tool something to push against.

Make sense?

I have found that when a crank puller is stripped, or just isn't working, an automotive gear puller works very well. Many auto parts shops will loan tools out or rent them for a small refundable charge.

Get a 3 arm gear puller, put all 3 arms around the crank arm, then use the same principal that your crank puller uses.

It has worked very well for me in the past. However, i have only tried it on non-drive side crank arms.

I have a thing for my ISIS cranks for remove them. It's a little black knob looking thing I slide inside of it, and then put the tool inside. I'm not exactly sure of the reason or what it is called, but I'm supposed to use it.

Hmm.. the tool I have is supposed to be for ISIS rather than square, I was sort of wondering though if the head on it was large enough to be pushing against the right thing though, cause it seems a little small.

Am I supposed to be getting all kinds of resistance when I'm using the crank puller? It's pretty tough to spin and I'm not a pussy or anything, so I'm worried I'm going to break something.

did you get the washer out from between the crank bolt and the crank arm (might still be inside the crank arm...)?

that's what you use if your tool is for tapered cranks. at the shop, we use this tool:

as well as the little knob thingie (for splined cranks).
