Should the punishment fit the crime or should it be a deterent?

Let's remove jail time and capital punishment (EDIT: from the discussion). Using just monetary punishment and community service (cuz time is money).

The prison system truly needs to be reformed, but in my opinion not the way you are stating.I think it should be 100% punishment. Jail time should be longer than it already is and harder. Start by taking away all luxeries like TV, air conditioning, sports equipment (weights too), personal belongings like posters, etc. etc. Then activate the prison work force / chain-gang to a level it has never been used at before....."cuz time is money." Nothing quite like free labor to help maintain the federal highways....Hell they could even cut our taxes by using the prisoners! Let these dudes spend 10 hours a day digging ditches and see how many of them wanna screw up and end up back in the prison system.
I am even for taking away "real food" and giving them a diet of nothing but Prison Loaf (http://abcnews.go.com/sections/2020/2020/stossel_gmab_prisonloaf020913.html) and water. This is all they need to receive their daily nutritional numbers and they deserve nothing beyond that while serving time.

I am picturing something kind of like Cool Hand Luke :thumb:
Let's make prison a not so fun place to visit......then people might try a little harder to be good after their first time there.... :nopity:

i didn't mean remove prison time, I mean, remove jail time from the discussion. Jail should still be a punishment, but I'm talking about misdemeanors, speeding tickets, littering... where the punishment is money or community service.

sorry for the confusion.

This presupposes of course that prisoners are at the moment sitting around drinking pina coladas and playing golf. Prison is ALREADY hard time making it harder isn't gonna do a thing from stopping people committing crimes. Instead of sending prisoners back into society even more angry and resentful than they already are, wouldn't it be better if when they left prison they had some options. Things like an education, a trade, some money earned in prison to give them a start. A real chance at reformation. Yours is the typical short term, unthinking, closed mind view of prisons that does nothing to stop crime.
Sorry to hijack your thread Loopie.

That all ya got? What would you do Shirley, let them die? The fact that some Americans haven't got reliable health care is not the fault of the prisoners.

I would make prison hell. I would do most of what zod said, then, upon release, they'd be eligible for low paying government trash pickup jobs for a period of 6-8 months. They can start again like anyone who just moves out of their parents' house can start again.

Pay attention Shirley, prison is already hell, how is making it even worse going to help. It won't stop people committing crimes. Do you think now when people leave prison they think "that wasn't so bad I think I'll rob that liquor shop over there so I can go back in" .

No, but that obviously shows it aint hard enough. I want it so when they get out, they run, screaming from the gates, swearing to christ they'd never subject anyone or anything to that kind of torture and they will die before they go back.

F:cken hell talk about banging your head against a brick wall. The point is Shirley it doesn't matter how hard you make it, it has nothing to do with whether people committ crimes or not. Increasing the brutality of an already brutal system helps no-one.
