the full congressional record
and the highlight of "turban durbin's" rant after reading an email from an FBI agent:
"If I read this to you and did not tell you that it was an FBI agent describing what Americans had done to prisoners in their control, you would most certainly believe this must have been done by Nazis, Soviets in their gulags, or some mad regime -- Pol Pot or others -- that had no concern for human beings. Sadly, that is not the case. This as the action of Americans in the treatment of their prisoners."
some quick stats:
  • Adolf Hitler - About 9 million dead
  • Soviet gulags - About 2.7 million dead
  • Pol Pot - About 1.7 million dead
  • Gitmo - zero dead
  • Gitmo - five instances of Koran abuse by prison guards
  • Gitmo-15 instances of Koran abuse by prisoners.
in fairness, here's some of his equivocation on his remarks:
  • "To suggest I'm criticizing American servicemen, I am not,"
  • "I don't know who was responsible for this. But the FBI agent made this report
  • "Now sadly we have a situation here where some in the right wing media have said that I've been insulting men and women in uniform. Nothing could be further from the truth. I respect men and women in the uniform." (almost as much as he respects those gitmo guests who weren't wearing a uniform when they were apprehended on the battlefield)
  • "In this particular incident that I just read from an FBI agent describing in detail the methods that were used on prisoners, was I trying to say that, 'Isn't this the kind of thing we see from repressive regimes?' Yes."
in the interest of making lemonade from lemons, here's a gitmo cookbook

mmmm.....felafel!

yeah, I'm sure that the indefinite imprisonment without trial, and the only hearings you get are closed military tribunals is absolutely nothing like the gulag. Small police-state dictatorship is probably more similar... :nopity:

side-note, anybody catch Jon Stewart last night where he played a clip of Pat Buchanan compared the Democrats filibustering judges to Nazis? Hmmmm, pot, kettle? :nopity: :nopity: :nopity: :nopity:

of particular interest, an excerpt from durbin's gitmo floor statement
"Colin Powell argued that we could effectively fight the war on terrorism and still follow the law, still comply with the Geneva Conventions. In a memo to Alberto Gonzales, Secretary Powell pointed out the Geneva Conventions would not limit our ability to question the detainees or hold them even indefinitely. He pointed out that under Geneva Conventions, members of al-Qaida and other terrorists would not be considered prisoners of war.

There is a lot of confusion about that so let me repeat it. The Geneva Conventions do not give POW status to terrorists.
basing his (correct) position opon this
Nationals of a neutral State who find themselves in the territory of a belligerent State, and nationals of a co-belligerent State, shall not be regarded as protected persons while the State of which they are nationals has normal diplomatic representation in the State in whose hands they are.

http://www.civicwebs.com/cwvlib/constitutions/un/e_un_geneva_convention_4.htm#Article 4
recall the geneva convention was held not to spell out how to treat captured prisoners - this was a side effect - but rather to lay out the rules for war (subsequently abandoned by the current guests at camp x-ray)

Between a rock and a hard place.
Durbin apologises for his absurd, degrading and insulting comments:

WASHINGTON - Attempting to stem growing criticism, Sen. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said yesterday that he regretted any misunderstandings caused by his comments that compared some U.S. actions at Guantanamo Bay to those committed by the Nazis or Cambodia's Pol Pot.

"I have learned from my statement that historical parallels can be misused and misunderstood. I sincerely regret if what I said caused anyone to misunderstand my true feelings: Our soldiers around the world and their families at home deserve our respect, admiration and total support," Durbin said in a statement issued by his office yesterday.

kinda like getting busted in the sack, and explaining to your wife only after she rightfully beats the crap out of you that you regret she misunderstood your misdirected affections toward another, and that your true feelings are still for her.

"yeah baby, i shagged her, but i love you"

Here's my question...

Who cares what the FBI thinks about anything. They (along with the CIA) dropped the ball on 9/11. Besides, last time I looked at it, the schmoes in Gitmo are POW's. Thats Prisoners Of War for the whose who at home. Whats the operant word there? W-A-R. SO what the average person doesnt like to hear that the Intel guys are using Loud music to get info out of them. Guess what, I did the same thing to a guy that was involved in roadside bombs. Pantera works the best for making them talk. Its not about being politically correct, its about bringing my soldiers, ALL of them, home in one piece.

ah, blessed relief, some democrats are now calling for the leading senator to apologize and worse: step down from his leadership post for the insensitive remarks made during the war on terror which sharply divided this country.

oh wait, that was for trent lott's remarks during a roast for a fellow senator.
nevermind.
nothing to see here.
now spread out.

Between a rock and a hard place.
Turning off the AC - Hmm, the first two times I was deployed to Gitmo (during the Hatian boatlift) the barracks I stayed in didn't have AC, and the aircraft hangers and shop spaces didn't either. Besides, these guys are from Afghanistan, it's hot there. Big deal.

Turning on the AC - Beat's the alternative.

Rap music - Ok, that might be construed as torture to the intellect, but it really won't hurt you.

Can anyone tell me how many prisoners have died at Gitmo?

The Red cross says that most of the prisoners have GAINED considerable weight since arriving.

Let's just remember that the dudes at Gitmo are there because they are enemy combatants. You don't release enemy combatants while a conflict is in progress lest they pick up another gun and start shooting.

If they absolutely must be released I suggest we load them all into a 747 and fly them to Charles DeGaule airport and let them go in France.
