Out of my mind, back in a moment.
The Danes invented this ingenious technology to build anything and everything from houses and walls to chimneys, roads and arches. They were also kind enough to expose the rest of the world to it as well. Like unreinforced concrete, it doesn't have a lot of tensile strength, but it works by everything being kept in compression (such as arches that can carry enormous loads).

This old invention can still be viewed today and adorns a huge majority of american homes.

I'm going to think Splat's answer is wrong, simply because Native Americans used brick long before they came into contact with the Europeans.
