ROEE, wanted to split off from the thread as chang's vitriol does nothing for intelligent discourse. My quesiton is,

What do you think of the fact that much of the "Separation Fence/Wall/etc" is being built on land that was captured in the 1967 war, as opposed to the "Green Line" as the Gaza fence was built? I don't doubt that Israel needs a fence, and am kind of surprised that it wasn't built earlier, but am disturbed on the route that it's taking. Its obvious that it's being built so that it keeps as many settlements on the Israeli side as possible, but in doing so makes it look like a land-grab instead of a protection from suicide bombers.

Thanks, just wanted to get your feelings on it, I can get liberal views from haaretz and conservative views from jpost but neither really tells what the rest of the population thinks.

I'm still amazed people are so interested in this swamp :D

Anyway, to your question - Most of the Israeli citizens object the path chosen for the fence. I think it's wrong, and it's causing unnecessary pain to the Palestinians. So do most Israelis.
However, there is NO way on earth Shraon could have evacuated settlements, politically.
He just didn't have the political - not public, as that he had - support.
He can barely evacuate the minor number of settlements now in the Gaza strip without losing his goverment.

So why not go for re-election, you might ask. Well, The Israeli parlament is divided between many parties, at least two of which (Third and fourth largest) take no clear stance on security affairs, but rather are focused around civil affairs. For this reason, the elected Parlament can not reflect properly the opinion of the Israeli public on security issues.

BTW, not only the public supports a fence around the green line, but the army too. It's a huge waste of money and resources, the fence is much longer than it had to be.

I noticed how it winds in and out so much and did look extremely inefficient. If y'all were the USA, I'd say that fence contained a lot of congressional pork in the bill to make said fence.

thanks, I've been following Israel for quite a while now, and have to say that your politics are SO much more entertaining than ours here in the USA. Wobbly coalitions, trade-offs, outright bribery, it's amazing (although am VERY glad we have a 2 party system here, though...) :thumb: Was disappointed by Shinui, thought that they got a lot of votes from moderates (at least foreign policy-wise) and have turned out to be anything but.

Stay safe, it's good to hear some moderate voices over there.

dante,

You are so right about our politics :D It's a farking circus. The best example would of course be the infamous party of "Shas", which is equivalent to taking a dozen monkeys, and interperting their will by inspecting their feces.
They are, by far, the worst.
The two parties I spoke about are these dudes Shas, and Shinui.

Shinui voters are still very moderate, its just that this camp (to which most of the population belongs, I believe) has seen a great fluctuation in public opinion caused by terror, moving it from mid-left wing to borderline-right wing.

yeah, that's what I figured, Shas is pretty much worthless and Shinui does whatever Lapid feels like that day. Sorry to say it, but I use Israel whenever someone complains about the two party system... :D
