When you are tired or relaxed, you don't breathe as deeply as maybe you should in order to introduce fresh air into your whole lungs. Yawning is caused by your body sensing it has excess CO2 in your lungs. It is a mechanism to get a big volume of fresh air and flush out all that old CO2.

Chang, that is a theory from 15 years ago that has since been debunked.

I read an article in a month or two ago about it. Some guy at some university (my documentation is great isnt it) says that after a study he concluded that yawning expresses empathy between mamals, including us. That explains the contageous aspect and it also means that we are paying attention best when we yawn.......

I've always wondered why peoples' eyes water when they yawn. Does a yawn affect the tear duct?
It usually has to do with boring someone to tears:rofl:

Yea I never understood why you teared when you yawned. It always makes people think you are sad or something after a good yawn.
