I know a couple of People who have done it. it takes a special bread.
One of my Friends ( Cathy Ellis ) won it in 1991. A group of 5 of us did a century about a month before she did the race , she had already done 100 miles before meeting up with us, and she still out motored most of us.

That's putting it kindly.
I've known several who have done it. I went across as a mechanic twice and the fields are definitely full of characters.
What is it for those of us not in the know. 
It really should be called RAA but RAAM better describes what it does to your ass.
Actually RAA would work equally well in that respect. Just think RAW.
Thanks. That'd be cool to do - but not as a race. But to be able to take time out to do a ride across the country. That'd rock I bet.
That and hike the AT are my two life goals. If I do those, then I'll move on to kayaking the Pyongyang.
