....I am looking for some feedback on these cranks (or just x-Type in general). I know it is really early, but I am considering them for my 5 Spot & would like to hear any personal reactions to them. There have been a few negative comments floating around out there & I am curious whether they are legitimate or just inane internet jockey babble.....thanks

Isn't this site made up entirely of inane babble?

I for one, plan on picking up a pair for my RFX. The babble you're refering to is the boogering of the drive side crank that some people have experienced with the diabolus. Allegedly from taking the cranks off too often.

I'll roll the dice with them.

The only thing I wished they'd done is ship Atlas with the DH bb cups that ship with Diabolus rather than the XC cups that're packaged with deus.

Caution, XC info.....I've been running them on my XC rig for a month or so and I like them. Seem to be a bit stiffer than my XTR (the new style). They weigh a few grams more but the rings do not wear anywear near as fast as the new XTR and they actually have replacement parts! Somewhat harder to set up. I too like the DH cups and I'm using the DH stlye cups even on my XC race bike (MUCH less creaking). They get the thumbs up from me.

I was also looking at a set for my spot, but when i called RF didnt have any in stock. So i decided to keep the ISIS BB and just get a set of turbines.

I have read a few negatived of the RF system compared to the Sh!tmano system. Mostly with bearing preload problems. Ill give them another season and see what the outcome is. Maybe then ill jump on the program. Im sure in 2-3 years everyone will be realizing some glitch in the system and will be looking to some new and improved standard.... (isnt thats whats going on with ISIS??)

Oh and JnC, I just posted pics on the turner forum...... DHX looks like a go for me..... check my pics... does our clearance(or lack of) look the same? How hard did you compress the bottom out bumper?

...Jenson has black ones in stock now.

...Shimano's design is rock solid. I wish RaceFace went with pinch bolts instead of elastomere spacers.

my local independent bike shop services some DH and some road bikers. for the most part they are pretty savvy about hi end parts. they were initially stoked about this shimano alternative. however in practice, getting the preload 'just right' was a hit or miss process apparently. one of their sponsored road bikers had a massive BB failure during a recent race that was preload related, and he said to hell w/ race face X and went back to shimano.

so there you have it. a big dose of hearsay from my local shop. FWIW! time will tell whether this RF product is good or bad. i had planned to buy some for my XC bike, but i'm holding off for now until i have more data to go on.

EDIT to add: the issue was related to the elastomer part i.e. it made dialling the preload difficult?! not sure exactly since i haven't installed a set myself. but this bike mechanic usually knows what he's talking about.

Coming from an XC background, I've been using the Deus cranks for about a month and a half and my BB is toast already! Arrgh! I'm so disappointed b/c I was really enjoying how smooth they are and I had switched to shorter cranks. Hopefully, I'll be able to get them warrantied. I'd hold off for a couple more releases to see if they get the "bugs" out.

i always find it funny when people spell Shimano like that in a post that basically says they have the better product/aspect/whatever...
Im just trying to be a part of the "cool" crowd ya know..... ;)

Funny thing in this case i was sorta saying shimano has a better design (no preload issues, unlike what ive heard about RF).

In the end I chose to stick with my ISIS system because its never been a problem for me as long as im not using the lowest end BB. ......

Shimano may not have had preload issues, but I remember that they had so many bearings being warrantied when they were first released that people were waiting for weeks to get replacements.

I don't think so. I preordered a pair for a friend weeks ago. They tell me it will be the end of August at the earliest.

....it's hard to differentiate between bad wrenching & problem products when dealing with the internet. Everyone's default impression of themselves is one of able know-how. I have spent a good deal researching these cranks now & after speaking tonite with the folks at Go-Ride, they have installed a bunch of the X-type cranks & have had no issues. They did specify that they are more difficult to install PROPERLY than the shimanos...I think that this may be the real difference here. Perhaps I shall give them a go & see for myself...

There is a moment owner on this board? Who knew?

Fulton here was selling a set of black ones in the classifieds but they're gone now. So if Jenson didn't have 'em, someone did.

I might add while the x-type is a little bit harder to set up it has one advantage and that's that the x type also has more chainline adjustability than the shimano (x-type has chainline spacers vs. none on the shimano, only b.b. spacers which x-type also has) fella who recommended the dh cups might be spot on with that........ something to think about....

Hone- from our rep. will be a "XT" of Saint, Saint being the "XTR" the saint is said to be lighter and hone will be just a lower end option for riders wanting Saint. funny thing was they were marketing towards endurance racers. (but I guess in endurnace racing durability is key)

I got my black ones from Larry at Mtn High Cyclery back in May so I'm not sure if he has any more.

Well, I wish I could say for sure that mine were installed correctly but I really don't know and I'm sure if I had done it myself, they wouldn't be ;) but OTOH, why are they so finicky about the installation? I read the directions and it didn't seem like they were at all difficult to install and set up. Is there some kind quirk or trick involved? I'll try to give Larry a call today and see what kinds off issues that he's run into so far and see what I can do about getting the BB warrantied. I'm keeping my fingers crossed on that one. At least the BB isn't too expensive to replace.

I spoke to Larry about X-type and he'd mentioned not having any problems thus far. The problems where reported by 2 or 3 board members here and had to do with repeated removal and re-installation.

My buddy is on his 3rd warrenty. Also, while in North Shore, we talked with the LBS about them and they said they have warrentied every set they have sold. RF knows there is a problem. If you get them try not to take them off very often. The drive side crank arm will become loose. Call RF they will tell you the same thing....

Whew, then I'm glad they've noticed something. That's exactly what happened with mine and I never once took them off after they were installed.

I am on the lookout for some new cranks also, and it was a toss up between the Race Face and Shimano's.

After hearing a bunch of comments from other monkies, I decided to go with the XT. They just seem to have much less problems than the RF.
