alright, i feel really stupid asking this, but im trying to get my race face diabolous cranks off, and i tried using a ccp-2 crank puller, and i realize by now that they are the wrong crank pullers for the cranks, does anyone know what kinda crank puller i need for my cranks? :)

you don t need any type of crank puller... make sure that the 10mm outter hex bolt (it s black) is firmly in place... to remove the cranks you just use a standard 8mm and turn the inside crank bolt... the crank uses self extracting bolts...

hopefully you haven t stuffed the things up...

Well, I got the shimano M760 cranks about a month ago. In the QBP catalog they mention the shimano tools that are necessary to remove/install the cranks. One tool is for the cap, and one tool is for the BB cups. The tool is a big ring with splines on it, it looks similer to BB-ring removes on cheap bikes (different spacing though).

The Race Face X-type cranks say "no special tools required" in the QBP catalog. I know because I was checking this a few days ago because I was going to help my friend remove his X-type cranks.

Basically, QBP is wrong and you do need a special tool, the special tool is the Shimano tool for the M760/960 cranks. Park makes the same tool, and either one will work, but this is a requirement and QBP is misleading in this instance. The M760/960 tool works perfectly. This tool is for removing the BB cups, removing the cranks is fairly easy but be sure you understand that it's a self-extracting setup.

Race Face X-type cranks are similer to the shimano with one big difference, the drive-side crank arm is pressed on to the axle like a normal crankset is pressed onto a spindle. This requires a huge self-extracting steel bolt (which is why the XC RF versions weigh significantly more than the shimano), so there are no "pinch bolts" like on the shimano integrated bb cranks. Otherwise they work the same though (big axle permanently attached to non-drive crank arm).

this sounds like a bunch of wierdness to me. A crank puller on Diabolus? Anything on any bike with a screwdriver and a hammer? .... whatever, you guys are weird.

That article is very misleading. They say that you "don't need any special tools to install the cranks", which sounds like the line in the QBP catalog.

The problem is that you DO need a special tool to install the BB cups, and without a BB, you can't install cranks, so you need a special tool to install the cranks.

fine don't read it, just use it for the 10mm/8mm bolt pic. self-extracting. SEE!

They sound like NorthShores, not Diabolus. Diabolus use external bearing bbs. If they're NorthShores, then you're dealing with ISIS. And somebody mentioned the ISIS tool you'll need elsewhere in this thread already.

Do yourself a favor and check out www.parktool.com. You'll find all of the building and tear-down info you need right there. Specifically what tools you'll need.

If they are ISIS, you can use the standard crank puller you have. However, you have to have something against the BB for the crank puller to push against. I have a 1/2" hex nut that fits the bill. Just put something that size up against the BB before screwing in the crank puller. This works for my Prodigy DH crankset and my Truvativ crankset.
Hope this helps.

isis use the ccp-4, diablous follow everyone elses instructions. or just take it to a shop and ask them what they are having to do and what tools they are having to use that would be the simple no worry solution. but dont stick something down in your cranks (or atleast thats what i think your saying) cause you dont want to risk breaking it off in there that would be bad.

hey, thanx a lot for all the info, and i wouldnt really go with the idea of sticking something in the cranks, just heard it from somewhere, i pretty much just gave up and just took it to the shop, and i just need to get an isis, thanx again for the interest.
