Has anyone had a problem with race face cranks with the X-type bearings loosening up? I have tightened them after all 3 of the rides, I have used them on, and have gotten to the point of carrying the wrench to tighten them on the trail! One of the guys I ride with said he had the same problem but after a while they stayed tight. Any one else have this problem and a solution?

Are you using a torque wrench???

I don't care for that interface. It just looks cheesy to me. That said - I have never had problems with any splined crank being loose, except when I broke a crank bolt.

I started out with good intentions and used a torque wrench. But on the trails when they were loose, I just cranked them tight. The next time, a little tighter. Last night in the middle of the ride, I cranked them down pretty tight. I didn't check them at the end of the ride so I don't know if they held!

Talk to Berkshire rider , he used to haveto tighten them up 2 -3 times during the ride.
At least I know I am not the only one! I was worried I did something wrong in the assembly, but I have built a bazillion bikes it wasn't my first dance! I even whent so far as to re-read the manual (page 5 specially) inside joke I am pretty sure I didn't do anything out of the norm or wrong.

Was there anything that Berkshire rider did to remedy it? or did he just put something different on?

I've got the Evolve DH with x-type and have no problems with them. There is a 8mm spindle bolt, them also a 10mm lock bolt. Make sure you tighten both! Quite possibly the best crank for the money EVER. Those x-type bb's are so solid and the cranks are stiffer than the photographer that took April Law's trikey pic.

Agreed! I'm running RF X-types on everything but the road bike and have never had a problem.

Hey brunge - read away at these threads on mtbr.

It looks like it may be a flaw that keeps them. It could be spacer related as well. I wouldn't loctite anything but the crank bolt. Cranks aren't something to toy with when it comes to removing them. If they get stuck from loctite, it's a bitch to get them off.

thanks, It seams as if a few others have also had issue with them. I am going to take them off tonight, make sure there is no damage from them coming loose and re-install them. I may put a little medium weight loctite on the crankbolt. I had contemplated loctite, and after reading the threads you linked to, I saw that some other folks have corrected the problem with a little bit of loctite.:thumb: that doesn't mean I wont keep Race Face on my speed dial on the old cell phone for a little trail side once over/in the field product review. Just kidding

Yeah - I bought a new bike. I used to have to re-tighten the non-drive arm at least once a ride, because it would loosen while on the trail. I was lucky I never forgot to tighten it during the ride, prior to a drop or rockgarden and stripped it out. It was loc-tighted twice, and still loosened itself through the loc-tight. :mumble: There's other riders who have complained about the loosening problem, so signs point to a product flaw. Hate to say it, but your solution may be a different crankset.

Thanks for the info. I am not against gettin new stuff, cause I can get everything at a pretty good deal at the shop. I was just wondering if what I had going on was an isolated situation. I feel better knowing It wasn't just me. Your input will definitely help make a decision! I may give them one more chance though with the loctite!

I had nothing but problems with mine too. I got one out of the first production run, and they also had an issue with the finish. Turned from ano black to a quite ugly purple color in about 2 months of average riding. That, and they won't stay tight. I personally don't like that system. I'm no Shimano guy, but for two piece cranks, you can't beat the security of the pinch bolts!

Brunge get rid of them while they are basically new, and get a set of xt's. I have not had them loosen up or make a noise in 2 years, that is solid.

Oh and the bearings still feel smooth as hell, after all that winter mud...

Race face used to rock the party but they have fallen a bit behind with this overcomplicated system. Shimano kept it simple and is winning this one.
