Probably 99% your fault; usually that occurs from operator error. You have to make sure that the crank extractor is threaded ALL the way down before you start pulling the crank. That means you have to use a wrench on the "nut" to get it all the way down.

I've owned many RF's and it never happened. Of course, I've also owned cranks from Shimano, FSA, Sugino, Caramba, and numerous others and it never happened to any of them either.

False. The only crank I'm aware of with steel sleeves in it are the Truvative Hussefelts, but those are only in the pedal threads - they had to do that b/c they were so damn soft everybody's pedals just ripped right out. Supposedly that problem is fixed these days, with the Horzfeller cranks.

North Shores are Race Face's toughest cranks - they're very good. Make sure you get ISIS ones though, don't waste your time with square taper - if you could even FIND square tapers anymore. They're definitely overkill for XC and light FR though; the Turbines would be a much better choice (ISIS, of course).

na it wasnt my fault cus i never took em off or tried before, i went to a shop to see about my creaking in he bb, he put some tape on it. it was him most definaetly. and i think i will get the isis drives, i dont think that they are over kill fro light free ride as in 6 to 7 footers and once a year a ten (i hope!). so i caget em at price point with bb for 119!!!!!

Interesting...Sure am glad got myself some Prodigy DH for that matter. Mine stayed tight on my hard tail since I got it last year with lotf of 5-6 foot flat landings. Good stuff...

I think you should get the Race Face North Shore cranks. They're lightest, strong, good all around cranks. Not too expensive either.
