RaceFace BB spindle help...

Okay, I screwed up....my BB was creaking so I removed it, cleaned the threads, re-greased and when I was about to reinstall the BB I noticed that the grease had reacted with the print on the RaceFace label and the arrow which indicates the drive side was wiped off!

When I removed the drive side crank arm, I recall the wear marks on the spindle (taper lock) being very distinctive and different from the marks on the non-drive side. So, I made an educated guess and reinstalled the BB the direction I *think* it was before.

My question is this, is there really that much difference in the design of the BB that it requires it to be installed a certain direction? By eye, there does not appear to be a difference, but then ofcourse why would there be an indicator arrow if it didn't matter?

So, if anyone has a taper lock Race Face BB, and recall which way the arrow points on the label, looking at it with the Maple Leaf rightside up, please let me know!

Thanks!

it's usually the BB cup orientation...the driveside cup threads in backwards (counter clockwise) while the non driveside threads in normal.... or did I miss the whole question?

hehe...kinda missed it. I know which cup goes to which side, its the orientation of the spindle I am trying to figure out.

Thanks though! :)

I don't think there is a difference between which side the spindle goes (unless I've been just lucky all these years putting them on my bike)...I would like to know too (without knowing the arrow indicator on the spindle)

sorry...coffee was kinda weak this morning

It doesn't matter as far as I know.. The marks are to keep people from trying to thread the BB in backwards, thereby ruining the threads in the BB shell and requiring them to buy a new frame.. though they probably deserve to, if they tried to force the BB in backwards

Oh, okay, my friend just told me that it does matter, and if you put the spindle in backwards, you're liable to crack the frame resulting in a catastrophic failure in the BB area, that will, in all likelihood, cause you to fall 10 feet into a ravine on your head. Good luck :D

..yeah, that was sarcasm.

I had the extra large coffee this morning plus a sudafed 12hr to fight this cold I feel coming on...so I am feeling a little woozy myself. :)

when I replaced my bearings I remember the instructions stating to mark which side is the drive side, there must be a difference or there would be no reason to mark sides.

I sent an email to RaceFace...hopefully I will get a response. If I do find out anything I will post the info!

oh...and sarcasm noted! ;)

Trip,
you can download the instructions from the RaceFace site. I think a schematic of the BB is in them.....maybe this will help.

Break the frame? What kind drugs is your buddy on? The spindle is usually a little longer on the drive side. That's the only difference. It can be put in backwards with no ill affect other than chainline being off or maybe the crank or rings hitting the frame. Rule of thumb is any printing on the bb can be read while looking down at the bb while seated on the bike. ie reading from left to right corresponds with left and right on the bike.

You are right on, that is an excellent rule of thumb to know...here is the response I got from RF. Stated the same thing as you.

"Looking at the bb with the mapleleaf rightside up and facing you. The drive
side is on the right. If you take a ruler and measure from the bearing to
the start of the taper, the drive side is a mm or two longer."

Take it easy.
