I made that mistake once.
Though maybe it just wasn't fun for me because I didn't bring my fully rigid carbon 29er single speed with funny looking handle bars and one of those seat posts you have to cut.
I have to admit I've never ridden up there. But I've seen lots of video and pics that made it look pretty fun. Not so?

Gooseberry is definitely a unique experience. Some will love it, others will hate it. The key is to charge and ride it like a big ass natural skatepark, or at least that was the case for me.

Apparently he didnt even do a qualifying run. There's a video in the comments where he explains what happened. I feel bad for the guy, coming all that way then not feeling it enough to go for it.

I also feel for the guy and for the fact that he was as underdog as it gets compared to the other contenders: no contest or media experience, first time on the site probably never had access to lift assisted riding etc.

I found Brendog's line to be the most impressive. I don't think many of the other riders could have stuck that non-existent line across the ridge. If difficulty of line was actually considered, he should have gotten a higher score, what with throwing the same trick as the winner, along with more tricks and what seemed to be a harder line.
One observation though, is watching people riding and dropping down the same ridge Gee was gapping shows how fast and gnarly that run was. These guys are dropping each step while the dude was gapping them. Crazy.

Competitors are probably stoked to not be dead. At what point does Zink NOT walk away? He's pushing the Evil Kenevil envelope of our sport. You know, that fine line between landing an incredible trick by literally defying death...and actual career ending, crippling failure.

Why bring up Gee's run from the past, when Andreus run from this weekend was EPIC, the speed and flow at the top was worth mega points, let alone the tricks at the midway.

Does anyone else remember "For whom the bell tolls" playing during Zink's run when he did that 360 live? That with the dark clouds and the wind added that much more to a nutty move.

Gee's run from 2010 would barely get through the quali rounds this year, if at all. That ridge is like an XC trail in comparison to the "heart" that Zink and Strait dropped into.
Adreau was my favorite to watch all weekend, just for the sheer speed and style he had down the upper part of the mountain. The terrain up there is so gnarly, too bad that gets completely lost on the TV coverage.
I was super impressed with Aggy as well. That guy has so much style it's just not fair, and if he had managed a smooth run without the little bobbles he had this year he would have been right up there as well. His dumped 3 was the move of the day for me.

Yeah, I found to have a good time I had to stand up and sprint super hard. After about 10 minutes of that my out of shape self was over it. I'm sure it could also be more fun following someone who knew the best route to take. It was just my wife and I hitting it cold turkey so not that fun... especially considering some of the other riding around St. George
And to stay on topic: Andreu's run was the most fun for me to watch. I wish that guy rode in more video segments he always seems to be absolutely tearing the trail a new one when he does and it gets me stoked to ride.

Aggy, holy sh1t, he really put on a clinic this weekend, I don't like to preach what could have been, but if his hand didnt come off grip, that was a banger run.
I always walk away from this event with an even greater appreciation for the guys in this sport, just making it down that mountain, is remarkable. Respect to all.

Whatever. I just think andreu would have deserved a better position and I think he agrees with that. But "no comment about the police" would sound awesome.
I think Lacondeguys run was rad, but I also think Zinks run was radder - his upper section was just at gnar by the looks (and sounds of it) and his trick totally overshadowed lacondeguys tricks in every way. Same deal with McGarrys line. Strait and Lacondeguys runs felt pretty similar to me, but straits run looked smoother and if the judges thought his upper section was harder (which it looked like it was, but its pretty damn hard to tell when watching it online) then it makes sense for strait to win. Not trying to take anything away from A.L., I thought his run was pretty baddass, but I definitely don't think he got robbed in any way shape or form. Rampage is about pushing the sport, and Zink and McGarry both pushed the sport more then he did.
Yeah, from my couch potato/never ridden there before/slightly drunk opinion Strait's run looked the smoothest and he got guinea pig points for being the first to hit the big drop that day. Lacondeguy's run looked the raddest and most aggressive to me. Also TMac's line was just as gnarly in my opinion and I felt like he got the short end of the stick because he didn't ride some of the same stuff that others did.
Luckily for everyone riding there the judges are not watching from at home on a couch and have experience riding there and know what sort of commitment each person's run takes. They also might not have been slightly drunk. So all in all I trust their judgement better.

Yeah. I imagine the conversation went something like:
"We heard you were going to do something completely insane and we're worried about you so we put more **** on your helmet in an effort to keep you from becoming a vegetable."
TMac's line was ridiculous. That drop near the top was so exposed, with a such a sniper landing. His stuff lower down was crazy too. He should have received more credit for getting creative and coming up with big lines of his own instead of riding the pre-built stuff. If anyone got robbed it was him.
Raises the question of whether you score lower if you don't use the features that have logos splashed all over them, and good TV angles? (Tinfoil hat anyone?)

Bingo. I think it's hard to make real judgments about the upper section without actually being there.
It begs the question: If they really cared, why didn't they put him in a moto lid designed for bigger impacts instead of some prototype?
it sounds less like an actual "prototype" and more like a production lid with some additional EPS panels adhered to the exterior of the outer shell.
I think it comes down to their intentions with this thing going foward, not whether foam pancakes glued to the outside of a helmet constitutes a "new" helmet or not.
