Pffft. Dimples do not create laminar flow. They create a thin turbulent layer near the surface that reduces flow separation. At high enough speeds there is no such thing as laminar flow, just ways of managing the turbulence.

Vortex generators do the same thing.
Some decades ago, boundary layer analysis was a specialty of mine.

Interesting. They were talking about how this new intake scoop uses "golf ball technology" to manage air flow.


.A "morphable outer skin" was used on the scoop. It stays smooth at low speeds, but grows dimples at higher speeds. It includes 60 individual elements that can move up to 10 millimeters, and achieves its maximum effectiveness at speeds above 74 mph.
