that is a belleville washer stack, useful for getting high spring rates in a small package. You can also easily tune the spring rate by reconfiguring the washers in series/parallel and having the same stack height. The drawback with them is rather limited stroke length.

Play with ratios for that issue I guess. TBH I love my air can. (Fox DPX2 performance elite.) Light as, and I have no issues with suppleness and I can tune the fuck out of it. I’ve had older coils on other bikes and this is a ‘better’ shock.
I have to say that of all the recent bike innovations, those new valves from Santa Cruz look really cool. I hope they do them in red soon.
