Got a pic of the face of that wall on the right? We've got a ton of that stuff here but it seems to mostly be vertical. It makes a disco floor on the top, I'd love to see it on a vertical wall.

I am pretty sure it usually forms vertically, so either some geologic motion happened there or the magma flow butted up against a good cooling source from the side like a source of water.

I was not looking soon enough as we passed the wall. The FS road we were climbing cut right through the middle of the basalt face. I hadn't been in that spot before and was impressed with the horizontal nature of the columns. We got more than enough basalt cliff faces to stare at around these parts.

Or shit just creeped, as it cooled or otherwise. . I've seen plenty of it at an angle I just don't know of any completely horizontal columns like that. I bet it makes a pretty need pattern on that flat vertical wall.
