I took the photo, That is Kenji Kukita of Japan a top notch Japanese Ice Climber and Mountaineer back when we both worked at Mont Bel. Mt Shasta, Cassavale Ridge Dec 18 1989 on my 35th birthday. Most hairball 3 days I have ever spent. We got hit by a storm at the summit, descended by headlamp in -30* temps with the windchill, at 2am on the north side we found ourselves unroped and downclimbing a 100' vertical face of mixed ice and rock. As the the weaker ice climber I descended first so that if I peeled off I would not take him with me. Most intense thing i have ever done, succeed or die.
