That's essentially correct, although there was (unsurprisingly) deep rifts within both parties on key social issues, unlike today in which they both seem pretty monolithic. I want to say a key turning point for the Republican party was during a Goldwater campaign speech in SF, in which he basically espoused the more modern version of Republican ideology (and lost nearly all black republican support in the process).

Yeah, um, that's kinda not how universities work. I know of many colleges that have been built in California since the 80s...

No, I think we are just gearing up for 2 years of sue/impeach/pass crazy ass laws with no hope of signage. Good times.
