Ranked Choice Voting, let's argue about it!

There's a ballot initiative in CO this year to allow Ranked Choice Voting. I haven't yet read all the particulars of it, and I think there are different flavors. Open or closed primaries, jungle primaries, state and federal elections, open to county and city elections or not, who even knows what else. It appears that citizens of OR, NV, AZ & ID are considering similar measures as well. I think Maine and Alaska have it already, but there's a ballot initiative to repeal it in AK.

Admittedly I don't know a lot about it, yet. I think some form of it is being used successfully in other countries, Canaderp and New Zilland maybe? Though I'm not well-versed in it yet, intuitively I feel like it's the foundational change needs to be made to get rid of the two-party system and the Electoral College.

I know y'all have opinions, have at it.

This won't "help" with the Electoral College issue, but I think it has the opportunity to upend the two-party system we're currently stuck with. Which I'm in favor of. I also need to read the particulars, but I'm inclined to vote for it.

We have it. Now rubes are trying to get it repealed cuz their voters are too dumb to put their 2nd, 3rd and so on choices. They literally told their constituents to not fill in the choices in the last election. If you have it AND you use it, it gives your selections a higher chance of winning if they don't win the outright majority right away. That's way too complicated for rubes tho.

We had it in 2008 or 2010 for local elections but it has mysteriously reverted but back to the typical way.

The only thing to "help" the electoral collage issue is senators and reps with a fucking backbone and hens teeth for that matter.

The "National Popular Vote Interstate Compact" could work around the problems with the Electoral College. It's currently a work in progress, but would be nice if enough states signed on to make it reality. If Pennsylvania signed on (along with the "pending" states), it'd be possible...

Yeah, but you're in a first world country, and we definitely can't have that sort of thing here.
We had an Atheist lady running the country at one point, I'm sure that would go down well in We're No1 land.
Edit-Maybe Agnostic.

Discussion on the topic here was pretty decent, from what I recall.

Ranked voting discussion begins about 60% down the page, so probably as far in the audio.
It starts here, but it’s worth listening to the preceding chunk. The whole thing is decent, but I suggest skipping the Andrew Yang portion at the start unless he’s someone you enjoy listening to.

I might be ignorant on it, but I have concerns that this is going to advance loser candidates that have no chance in actual elections. ie, maine advances Vermin Supreme because of a funny meme which makes Generic Candidate #103 lose electoral college votes. Now in the general election, Orangey McDumpster-Fire wins because Vermin was advanced as a spoiler. Is that something that could happen? I'm honestly not sure.

I'm not opposed to such a system on a universal, country-wide system, but I am seriously concerned as being the only state that does so (or being a progressive state that moves on this system, but Texas continues to suck and ruins everything). I'd rather move to a popular vote system so we can stop caring about PA or NC's opinion so much.

The spoiler issue gets addressed in the podcast I linked. It doesn’t go into explicit detail and it probably makes certain assumptions about how the system will be structured.

So A) I like to read, not listen to podcasts

2) that works if the entire nation goes with ranked choice. The question is, what happens if state A goes ranked but state Q stays with duopoly? Does my state advance Bernie while your state goes for Ted Cruz? and if 50% of the rest of the states are all in on Cancun Cruz, but the remainder are split for Generic Candidate 103 and Mr Mittens, do both candidates lose? It seems like this only works if everybody does ranked choice.

JTFC dude you're being spoon-fed a resource to learn about this and get your questions answered and you're going to complain about the medium of delivery? You've got the Google, use it!

(Says the guy who is definitely not monkey-sourcing all the research on the pros and cons of RCV by starting this thread. Yeah, I'm for sure not doing that right now. I would never.)

So click the audio portion of the link provided or look up the noted episode on your platform of choice. I provided the text from the transcript because that’s a lot easier to quote.

As for ranking and variety of systems used by different states consolidated into a federal result… yeah, there needs to be some sort of uniformity across the board. We don’t need a ranked vote issue equivalent to dangling chads.

If a bunch of old white dudes didn't think it should be part of the constitootshun when they drafted it 300 years ago leaning on their AR15's against the hood of their RAM dually, then clearly it shouldn't be used.

Ah, I see now that there’s a transcript of the whole thing.

Too many words, I guess I’ll never get my answers!

Illegal in no surprising places.
honestly. "the states that suck"

This article helped a little, I guess, in that I see you can simply not vote for a second choice. If I want my milquetoast "nothing fundamentally changes" kind of a guy, I can be a hardliner about it.
