My GT has an avid mechanical disc on the front but I want to upgrade to add the same disc on the rear.

what does this upgrade require, other than purchasing the hardware for the disc? Do I need to replace the entire rear wheel or just some parts? My frame is already disc compatible. I just need to set up the rear wheel.

You will either need to have your current rim re-laced to a disc hub or buy a new wheel. You'll also need a new brake cable and housing to accomodate for the extra length. XT disc hubs seem to be the best quality for the price. You might want to check ebay for a deal on a full wheel.

Just a tip: run full lenth cable housings with the Avids, they will work sooooo much nicer.
