I just got a used set of Mavic Cross Max XL's and installed them yesterday. I put the rear cassette on and the disc brake and all went smoothly.

I was almost done and started adjusting the derailure and the cassette just started spinning freely without turning the wheel (pedalling forward). Sometimes it will catch if I downshift, but then it will spin free again upon upshift.

Is my hub shot? Could I have caused the problem when installing it? Any simple fix for this?

Open up your hub and check the pawls and teeth and such. I had this problem with a ringle hub, and when I opened it the steel ring with the ratchet teeth on it had seperated from the hub body and was rotating freely. I sent it in and they replaced the hub. In your case it may be an easier fix, hard to say. I dont have much experience with mavic hubs.

Definately sounds like a pawl/ratchet issue.....mavic hubs are WELL known for this. Pull it apart, find out what is broken and then contact mavic about replacements.

Thanks for the help. I called my local shop and they're gonna' handle it for me. Hopefully it won't run me too much, but I just want it finished so I can ride; it's my only bike.
