Rear Shock Question

I'm thinking about replacing my rear coil shock with the 06 fox DHX, has anyone used it?

Is it really wise to use an air shock for DH/Freeriding?

Maybe I should stick with coil?

Seem like everyone has different opinions on this.

Do a search, Kona. I see lots of comments on how they hold up great, but weigh a lot less.

In hell. Welcome!
New bike comes with air shock 210 x 55mm. Shiny coil shock is 200 x 57mm. Whats the worst that could happen?

The rear wheel will travel by 12mm*leverage ratio (so probably ~ 1") deeper than it should when bottoming out, very likely hitting the seat tube.
Even if that does not miraculously happen, it will sit by 10mm*leverage ratio lower, messing up your geometry, lowering the BB and head tube angle among other things (like decreasing ETT, increasing stack etc).

Thanks, from what I can tell, the choices are the DB Inline and the RS Deluxe R. Not that many options for the 210 x 55mm. BALDERDASH

200x57mm is not a metric measurement fyi, 210x55mm is, because bike industry. Which is to say, the shock on your new bike is metric sizing, the one you are comparing it to is normal/old/legacy sizing. There is a good chance they don't even have compatible mounting interfaces.

Yeah I was converting the inches to metric to better compare the two. Am trying to coil shock the SBG Scout and was keen on the DHX2 SLS, mainly because the coil has orange paint to match my bike. haha Never imagined I would have to decide between Cane Creek and RockShox...

Lets say the DB Inline in the appropriate size is acquired, avoiding the ANAL-SARS-BOOST!EBOLAIDS. That is 210x55mm, a stroke of 2.16". Seems lotsa springs are either 2" or 2.25" stroke. The 2.25 would work but not the 2.0? Some preloading may be required for ease of insertion, eh?

You need to make sure the spring stroke is longer than the shock stroke, otherwise the GIF from StiHacka will apply. A 2.25" stroke spring on a 2.16" is not likely to require any preloading to install the spring.

There is a thread with good info here:
