OK, I'm considering buying a truck for versatility's sake and because I kinda want another dirtbike.

Do you guys think a crappy Ford Ranger (or similar) with a 4cyl would be able to hold 2 dirtbikes and make it work? What's the best out of the econo-trucks from the late 80s to the mid 90s?

Yeah, you can fit two dirtbikes in a small pickup no problem. Ive done it a ton. If you can find a nissan or toyota, they'll last longer, but Fords are by far the "nicest" of the bunch.

I also want to feel like a redneck. It helps me relate with the locals.
I'll look into like a Tocoma or a crappy Nissan too.

What's the budge? You'll be hard-pressed to find anything past 1990 Toy or Nissan under $3k.

I'm prolly gonna pick up a cheapass truck soon as well...would like it to be a smaller rig, but if the price is right, a big one will do in a pinch.

tacomas are great. toyotas in general last forever, and its pretty easy to get parts for them. i have a '98 taco with close too 100k miles on it and its still going strong.

Get a tacoma. It'll last you forever. Mine runs great. 98' with 147k on it. I would also look at nissans, or maybe an s-10.

Don't take this the wrong way but 100k should be easy on any truck except maybe 1ton and bigger.
When you get close to 200k, then your saying something.
I've had a 1 ton with 200k on it. Driven many others with up to 300k on them.

Domestic trucks are crap, I agree for the most part, but an import wouldn't take the abuse I have seen lots of the US trucks take.

For little trucks, yeah it would be imports.

SX, you're dumb. A 4cyl truck will get decent milage. And I wanna haul dirtbikes. Good luck gettin' a dirtbike in a hybrid. Plus for like 2k I can get a truck. Nothing else is really available at that price.

Every import looks clapped and like twice as expensive as a domestic. I like the Ranger, and it seems to be cheaper than Toyotas and it's not hideuos.

RM21, good idea. I may just have to do something like that. ;)

Ford Ranger.

Cheap, good (actually the best) mileage. Mine is very dependable and it rides great.

A Mazda is the same as a Ranger and you may find it even cheaper.

147k.... it just barley sarted

my Toyota (92 V6 5spd 4x4) just rolled over 313,000 today

as far as im concerned Toyotas are the best of the imports and I will probly never even consider any other band for a small truck, I haul two endro (bout 235lbs each) bikes no trouble.

If you really want a "redneck look" the ranger or an old Dakota is the way to go. but you'll need bigger tires, a tailgate thats a diffrent color (or even better a door) and a Rebel flag in the back window.
AND YOUR EASYRIDER RIFLE RACK with room for not one, not two but three your favorite rifles!

Ive hered nothing but bad things about S-10s

wow soory, I just saying the gas is high, yes i now some trucks arn't horribly bad and or some what decent, and I guess if you take into account what trucks are selling for right now then it is a good buy.

Mine has been nonthing short of grand. If you do regular upkeep anything will last you a long time. I drive that little pickup harder than I should and its still going strong at 165 k
Dude, you just said you have to replace the transmission, that sounds pretty sucky:biggrin:

Mark, rock a taco if you can afford one.
Rangers are good, just keep it far away from TJ:happydance:

I'll sell you my '96 ranger for $1000. It's got 230k miles on it. Good luck driving it back to Cali...

Seriously though. Rangers / Mazda B series seem to be a pretty reliable vehicle. I'm sure you could find a decent used one.

I had a 1996 Nissan 2WD 4 cylinder trucK and, although it served me well, I wouldn't try to haul two dirtbikes in it. I felt like the Nissan 4 cylinder was a little under-powered back then. Not sure about the newer ones.

I didn't say replace...Just work. It was fine how it was but it was just upkeep. new filter, gaskets, fluid and some minor adjustments and BAM.....back in the game.

How much for a semi-modern Tacoma w/ a regular (short) cab and base options? What year is yours?

im a perfect example of why you should get a ranger. mine saved my life twice.
it went from this:

to this

and i finally finished her off with this

might i add that it still ran after i crashed it the second time. i put it in 4wd to try to back out but it started catching foliage on fire so i shut it off threw water on it and waited for the tow truck

I am indeed. Don't worry though, I've been working for a long time now. I'm not the brat the facts would lead you to believe.
