Looking into getting a new big screen TV. The ones I’m looking at are in the $1200-$1500 range. I found a web site where I can pick up the same TV reconditioned for around $500 cheaper. Has anybody had any bad experiences with buying reconditioned stuff? I was told that when they recondition something they replace whatever is broken and give everything the once over to make sure that there wont be anymore problems. I would love to pick up a TV and save big but not if I am going to end up with a POS on my hands.

Thanks
Dennis

I've bought reconditioned tools.

If it's "factory reconditioned" and carrys a warranty it's worth considering. Make sure the warranty is for a good period of time, and see what it actually covers. Then it's a judgment call.

And, check the cost of shipping and taxes. It could quickly make it not as good a deal.

Bought a few things reconditioned/refurbed, and had pretty good success. I got a super high-end Dell for about a g less than what it originally sold for 5 years ago and it is still working well as a 2nd pc in my house. Got a camera as well that has definately made the cut. just make sure that there is a valid warranty and roll with it. I can't pull the trigger on something without a warranty if it is a big ticket electronic item(tv, pc, etc).

For a serious answer, no. I bought a very expensive video camera for a few hundred dollars that way once and it promptly died after just one year of use...the amount of time the seller warranteed the product for.

As Biscuit said, "If it's "factory reconditioned" and carrys a [factory] warranty..."

I've purchased several refurbished/reconditioned products over the years and when it's done by the manufacturer, i've never had an issue.

Not all new products are tested, but all reconditioned ones are, so you know for a fact that it works.

I've done it for cheap items (sub $100) and been happy... but I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk it for the amount of money you're talking about.

Sam's Club or Costco...

They blow out plasma's all the time.
And DPL

Look for a discontinued model and ask for a discount on what it is already marked down to.

We have 50inch plasma screens in the store I work at for $1000
and 42 inchers at sub $1000. All name brand.

We were doing 47 inch Samsung DPL for 799 the other day. SOld out quick.

I've seen a 50 inch plasma go for 800 because there was no remote:bonk:

Or buying new they are like 1200-1500..

It's the only way to go.
Can return at any time and essentially upgrade:cheers: .

Give it some thought.

Do you have a Sony outlet store near you? Sony sells a 5 year in your house - repair or replace warranty, for around $125 on the reconditioned/refurbed TV's they sell out of the Sony outlet stores.

I bought an Ipod off of Apple's "refurbished/reconditioned" page for more than half off. It showed up and looked brand new, had a warranty, and has had zero problems. I would consider buying a computer off of that page now that I had such a good experience with it. If it has a warranty I would think it's safe, but if not I wouldn't bother trying to save $500, but risk god knows how much in possible repair bills.
