I am running Windows XP Pro and there is a red x on the top left corner of the desktop. I thought that it was someting in the image that I was using as my background, so I changed it. It is still there. Thanks in advance for you help.

Right click on desktop/Properties/Desktop tab/click Customize/Web tab:

See if you're displaying a webpage as your desktop, there will be a checkmark next to something in that list.

I know, but humor me and check anyway :)

XP overlays the webpage over your desktop. So, you can be changing your desktop image but still have the webpage over the top of it.

It's the active desktop. I am blanking on how to remove it, but if your right click desktop and go to properties, root around in the advanced tabs there, and hopefully un-check it.

My guess is if you do something akin to this, it'll disable it:
