Yeah, I watched the latest one and was pretty disgusted. About half the guys were just hucking stuff and landing uncontrollably. Clearly over their heads. Not to mention it was a group of like 30 riders + all the groupies & media types. It seemed like totally contrary to what, for example, Remi & Steve V. talk about in their videos about only hitting big stuff if they're 100% confident they can do it safely. It's amazing that only 1 person was ambulanced out. And then on top of it, they end the video with a plea to donate to medical bills for one of the kids who was there and suffered spinal cord injuries a couple weeks later. Goddamnit, stop promoting riding above abilities - there are life changing/ending consequences to that shit!
That whole thing seemed fine when it was a limited number of super capable riders checking off features that they were mostly familiar with as part of a big day out. Now that it's turned into a giant circus, it's pretty much exactly the wrong way of promoting any kind of individual "progression". There's high pressure from all sides. There's media there, collective peer pressure from all of the riders present, and the very limited time that they spend in any given location. Either do a very limited invite along the lines of the original event or keep it as a larger group event with only a handful of features and a focus on safety.

Head out to his hospital bed and tell him where he went wrong. Better still. Offer Redbull to take his place in the comp.

Kinda early to be this deep in the bottle eh?

Regards Woo's comment. I'm not saying he's wrong. Afterall Gee has a fairly long string of previous fuck ups getting his speed wrong for massively consequential gaps n jumps on unfamiliar terrain. Hope he makes a full recovery but also hope the dude finally settles down.

Just saw that. Good for him! Captain obvious says, “That’s a lot of air time!”

Edit: can biker-bros please stop screaming LET’S GO already? Jezus. It was old when Tom Brady said it in the Hertz commercial 5 years ago….

Just saw this on the Facebook from Gee Atherton.

Heavy day yesterday. Testing out the new drop on my Rampage run and a combo of slightly deep and a bit of a wind gust meant I couldn’t ride it out.
Injuries are not too bad tho, some fractures to vertebrae and a few skull fractures will mean I’ll have to chill for a few weeks.
What hurts the most tho is missing the event this Friday, especially after the dig crew have been putting in such an effort.
Big thanks to the medical crew on site, and to @alfraynor, @kuli_1995 and @moonhead_media for creating this beast. We’ll be back

FFS! He's irish. They're quite an excitable nation. "Let's go" is a phrase that's been used by sports fans and players here and in the UK and in Ireland forever. When shouted by Dan in that footage I'm pretty certain it'll have had absolutely nothing to do with "Tom Brady" (whoever the fuck he is) or any Hertz commercial from 5 years ago.
Do keep up Murca

Say, Gee, I know of a large broadcast conglomerate which recently acquired a niche race series that could use a knowledgeable, eloquent former racer on it's commentary team

Wasn’t really being too serious about the etymology of the phrase, so much as pointing out that it’s become the new “yeewwww!”

OK. IMO. Gee can keep hucking himself until time ends. Dude has skills and fitness. Never a dull moment. I'd love to see him come to some of my locals and show everyone how it's done.

So what do you do with all that? Too early to retire? Too late to play WC DH guy? Coach? UCI Delegate? "Consultant"?

IDK. What ever makes him happy. That's what I'd say.

It may have started somewhere else, but I blame R Willy for the over popularity of "let's go". I don't think I've ever gotten tired of a phrase so quickly. Man, I'm old.

Gee did ride some Moab this year, too. Not quite our local, but close.

gary, meet sven:

Isn't Sven known to be a rather nice person?
That's how you know who your true friends are...it's the nice people I don't trust
Naah. It's not 2003 and we don't listen to Limp Bizkit anymore. Some playful ribbing is fine but nice people are good.

Not Red Bull Insurance, they'd go bankrupt in the blink of an eye!
Doesn't Redbull offer access to some really high level specialists in Austria for Athletes? I remember either one of the athletes or photogs telling me about it
