Reducing Hadley QR front hub bearing play?

Hi all,

I've got a Hadley R7.0 QR front hub, and it has a fair amount of slop in it. By slop I mean if I grab the top of the wheel while it's in the fork I can move it right and left approx. 1/2". Spoke tension may be responsible for a little play, but most seems to originate from the axle/bearing region. Also, upon tightening the axle the bearings seem to be a little rough.

Any advice to lessen the play? I've got another rim with an XT hub that is much tighter, but I'd hate to waste the hadley. Gotta have that bling...

Planning to call Hadley on Monday, but hoped some of you folks might have advice before then.

Thanks,
Eric

You are in for a bearing replacement, no doubt.

Not particularly difficult to do, just source bearings from Hadley or a hardware store that deals with that kind of stuff.

I was going to respond yesterday, but I figured the answer would come from Hadley by then, so I did not....

but since no one has mentioned it yet...and just in case someone digs this up in a search:

Hadley hubs do NOT adjust via the axle...tightening the axle end caps will have absolutely zero effect on the bearing preload. Hadley bearings are (carefully)adjusted by the 'dust caps' with a pin spanner. Very small increments are needed (1/4 turn or less) generally and you want to tighten just to the point of no slop.
