They also point out that up until only days before the Republican Convention, Sen. John McCain was still thinking Sen. Joe Lieberman would be his running mate, until the "blowback" was so strong, they feared Lieberman would be rejected by the party, forcing the last-minute choice of Palin for the role.

Schmidt believes the Obama-Biden victory would have been even more lopsided without Palin on the Republican ticket.
It is very obvious that Palin is a total boob, but very little criticism has fallen on McCain.

I know his own campaign advisors are not going to throw him under the bus, but I am still hoping...

In hindsight, McCain really looks a lot like Shrub. A ****up with a powerful daddy and an attitude.
That's an interesting observation.

McCain did go into the family business, the navy, but obviously being a POW is alot different than the struggles of a National Guard/Oilman/Baseball Owner.

read about Johnny's history. If he wasn't from the McCain family he would've been court-martialed for what he did in Vietnam while he was a POW (where he technically shouldn't have been a pilot either, normally people get permanently grounded after crashing 2 jets).

Yes, he introduced Palin to the national stage.

I can never forgive for that.

BTW, I realized the criticizer who is going to be the most damning is Sarah Palin herself. Eventually she will turn on the man that made her career, and when she does that:

That wasn't McCain, that was Rush, Hannity, and far right wing who threatened to bolt if McCain actually proved that he was a "maverick" and went with someone like Romney (or Lieberman). I honestly think that if he'd picked Romney he'd be president today. But because Romney was pro-choice (until his little revelation) and was governor of a state that was pro-gay-marriage, he was anathema to the hardcore Republicans.

So the far-right sunk the McCain campaign. Kinda similar to NY23.

The West Wing was close in predicting the 2008 election: a young dynamic minority paired with an older backroom politician for the Democrats, versus ab older moderate West Coast Republican with a good looking conservative to appeal to the base.

But if McCain's choices were Romney, Lieberman, or Palin; we're lucky we have Obama...

Not neccesarily. Alot of men did alot of things they werent supposed to do under the extreme duress of many years of imprisonment and torture. When they didnt court martial the Peace Commitee guys, they sure as hell werent going to prosecute Mac. Not picking up for him, but he went through hell too...

True- Palin just plain sucks, she is totally incompetent and killed McCains support in the elections. He ruined his image in the last few months of the campaign, and the icing to that cake was Palin.
That being said I can hardly blame her in that situation. She was simply a podunk government official, who happened to be republican and of the female persuasion, therefore McCain's campaign advisers, who just found out that diversity was not in fact an "old, old, wooden ship" believed her to be a brilliant and successful addition to campaign strategy. Thank god they were wrong.

I considered the candidates. Palin destroyed any hope McCain had for getting my vote.

Same here.
I thought McCain's track record for independent thought/action was worthy of praise. I tried not buy into the swiftboating. But the Palin thing sealed it.

I get what you're saying, but its the manner in which he gave up the info. Most of the info he spilled wasn't under torture, he flat out volunteered it - and even used it to bargain to get himself better medical treatment. McCain's broken arms and leg happened in the plane crash that led to him becoming a POW, not during the time he was a POW. By the time he was freed, he was more or less completely healed.
