the cup and cone tools? Old BB in a frame I'm building. I don't want or need it, but I don't have the old bb tools to remove it either and my lbs will charge me something stupid to remove it. Can I just wedge a screwdriver in there or something and whack it with the ultimate fool tool?

Do you think I'll run into any issues when putting in the new BB? Like, will it not fit? Is there special threading or something with the cup and cone Bbs?

Thanks.

You CAN use a screwdriver, but it'll funk up your lockrings. There's a limited amount of times you'll be able to get away with it, before the things knackered...

A lockring tool shouldn't be more than $10 and the pin tool is about $8. It's worth it if you're hoping to dial your chainline (SS/fixie, right?).

As for the rest of it, there shouldn't be any issues with the threading as long as you're using an English BB in an English shell (driveside left threads), or an Italian BB in an Italian shell (both sides right threads). If you somehow ended up with French stuff.... um, good luck?

Thaks ohio. I'm putting a splined in (RFace). I could give a rats ass about the cup and cone. Let it get knackered. Is the lockring the only thing I'm going to have to worry about as far as removal with the screwdriver. You know, there's a lock ring on one side and then beneath that you've got the pin holes for the pin tool. rambling incoherently I know - lack of sleep and knowledge with this issue. One side with the ring with knotches in it, the other that C shaped thing (spanner side). Unthreading it from the shell is my concern. I'm sure I can knock the lockring off, but without the pin tool....?

I'm assuming it's English threaded as it's only a '95-96 frame.

Here's what you can do if you don't have a pin spanner. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and open them up so that one side sticks in each hole. Then just unscrew the cup.

I am sure that there is a way to work a Dremmel tool into the equation. Not that you need to, but they are fun.:D
I'd say channel locks for the lock rings, and if its loose enough then, try 2 nails through a piece of wood. Might be easier to turn that way.

Now thats just plain wrong. If Jefferson Davis had a Dremmel, maybe things would have been different.:D

Open vise.

Put outer lockring in vise, clamp firm.

Turn whole frame to right (anti-clock wise looking down at the vise, assuming this is a non-drive-side lockring)

Take out cup with needle nose pliers, or similar instrument.

Go get the threads chased at the LBS before you install a nice BB, you will thank me later.

no, jefferson davis was a cross dressing, cousin fu/cking puss who ran when the traitors rolled into town and took over. so i conclude that davis would not have used a dremmel nor would have known how to operate a dremmel had he of had one :D

Diamond cutting discs on dremels rule, Rhino!:)

They'll slice through almost anything! (including a BB fixed cup!)

As an added bonus, they shatter occasionally, sending fragments everywhere at high speed (Wear eye protection!):D
