I've just bought myself a Cotic BFe steel(reynolds 853) hardtail frame secondhand. The frame came with a Cane Creek Tank 2 steel deep insert headset.

After trying to remove the headset cups with a Park Tool headset cup remover, I've managed to get the upper cup out, but the lower cup just will not budge - doesn't seem to matter how hard I hit it, it's just not moving.

Anyone got any ideas?

Cheers

Deep headsets are always a little harder to remove. Hit it with some Bike-Aid (your lbs should have some, about 10 bucks a bottle, but be careful with it, itz got molybdenum in it) or WD-40. Let it sit overnight then try again.

Also, try a bigger hammer.

Well, I finally got it out wth socket inside the headtube, a piece of steel bar on the socket and a HUGE ****ing hammer. I honestly thought I was going to rip the headtube off at one point.

Anyway to anyone thinking of putting a steel, deep insert headcup into a steel frame, be aware that it's a complete pain in the ass if you ever want to get it out again!

Wish I saw this earlier... I was working on an old toyota landcruiser last week. There was this stainless steel bushing inside a frame mount. I used this to freeze it. After a quick firm tap with hammer and punch, out it flew
